    Hi everyone,

i would like to ask you an advice: how to get deep blacks.
i have the impression that if i crush too much the blacks under 0 it starts to have trouble during rendering like noise in the blacks or clipping blacks or it look too contrasted.
is there a normal limit to set the blacks?

    thank you

It could certainly be considered a “style” thing to deviate , but typically… 0 is there for a reason. Your darkest blacks would typically be at or just kiss 0.

The impression of deeper blacks can be achieved by lowering other areas in a curve or just even your mids down…but going too far can really bugger up some images….unless that is the “style” you are looking for…in which case you may want to turn off broadcast safe, or you will just clip everything anyway.

If this is for broadcast…0 is the guideline

Contrast is also a matter of MIDTONES, so it’s not just the blacks per se: it’s your overall perception of contrast in the entire image. You can make an image look more contrasty by peaking the whites at 100 (or what we used to call 100ire in old-school video).

I would refer you to Alexis Van Hurkman’s book Color Correction Handbook for a good explanation of contrast:

And the Tektronix guide on using scopes for color-correction tools is also good:
