Hi Rosie,

HFS is the mac format for drives (MAC). If you use Windows its NTFS. For formating Raid drives use OS extended, not journaled. Yes with Raid 1 you have just 2 TB and slower speed. But with Raid 0 your complete data will be gone if one drive fails.

you have had the right thought. Get a new raid system! And for heavens sake run it on Raid 5 and not 0. Alex has given you his recommondations. I recommend a Sonnet R800 SAS with Hitachi HUA’s in it. It takes 8 Harddiscs, so you end up with enough storage to cover your 10 TB on Raid 5!

Hi Jesse,

I’ve followed your whole misery. I had nothing to add to your problem, no new idea what it might be. In a similar situation I would have reacted differently.

After one try reinstalling the raid, I would have switched the raid to Raid 5, to check whether the harddiscs within the raid are okay.
After that I would have replaced cable and run a hardware check on the computer (Tech tool Pro).
After that I would have replaced the drive array and would have bought the most solid drive array you can get for money.

you have to do a letterbox format.
So open up a 1080i or p timeline. Get your red epic slowmo into it. And voila!
If you want it full screen 16:9 you have to adjust maually (enlargen).

Good storage works for years without problems. Bad storage creates problems for years.

I think that if a manufacturer uses good solid components for their raids, the raid is worth buying. So far the raid can’t be cheap. I#ve never regretted the most expensive invests within my equipment. The cheap ones, have been those, I replaced within a short time span.
What we can achieve here with our experience, is to give advice for good, but affordable equipment. Equipment which meets exactly the needs the user expects. For some esata might be the best choice, others need FC raids. In most cases we really don’t know what components several companies uses for their arrays. It’s just when we work with it for years, we can say something fundamental. So let us share our experience!
It’s good to know that Bob is sharing his opinion with us.

Whant bandwidth are slots 2,3,4. It depends on your mac!
Normally slot 2 and 3 are 4x, slot 4 should be 16x.
So, I would put the esata card, which takes 2 devices on Slot4 and the esata card with one device on Slot 3 or 2.
But your pcix slots may be different.

that you use a PCIx slot x4 withg two esata devices. You need at least a x8 slot for two esata devices on one card, or you use the x16 slot for two esata devices attached to one card.
Can you configure your PCIx slots into 3 times x8 slots (depends on your 8core mac pro)?
