Hi Mark,

first thing to do is to get your Mac book attached to your GSpeed ES with a esata connection.
You need to get a Expresscard to esata adapter (f.e.Sonnet). Then you have a editing speed.
Next: Get yourself a HDD Docking station for the internal sata drives (USB) for back-up.
One FW800 drive or the internal HD in the MacBook you can use for the Renderfiles of your editing suite.
I would split the media with esata and the renderfilles on a seperate port.
Working with esata means that if you fill up the Raid more than 80% capacity (Minimum Raid5 never Raid0) it will slow down.
Work with one codec (my choice would be ProRes422, no HQ no LT). Transcode all media files into one working codec before start editing. (Mpeg streamclip or episode) You need less rendering then.
Last: Keep calm and remember slow is precise and beeing precise is fast.

The best thing is to turn on your whole Peripherie first and then your computer.
So the computer recognize your drives and other hardware attached to it,

The fans are in the chassis not in the drives,
the drives are okay. It’s the controller of the 5Big.

Hi James,

I’ve worked with two LaCie Drives 4Big. One, the old one (10years now) works brilliant, the other I’ve just thrown out (5years old). I think the controller was bad.
These boxes are okay, but they don’t have redundant or easy swappable parts, like a good reliant professional raid has. I’ve also got problems with a sonnet D400 Raid (similar to the Lacie). These raid enclosures ar about 500 bucks, so they are the cheapest enclosures you can buy.
In your case I think the fan has given up, then the temperature was rising over the critical point. It could be, that then the controller has given up.
These are closed boxes, no screws, no idea how to open them. Second – do you get the same fan inside the box to change it?
Best to throw it away. Take the HD’s and put them in another box.
LaCie, Gtech, even Sonnet QR maybe all the same. Sometimes you are lucky and your box works for 10 years, sometimes you are in trouble all the time. I replaced the LaCie for a Sonnet QR. The Sonnet works fine so far. We use these boxes just for Raid5 back-up. So data loss is very limited. Our crucial data is on top class FC Raid systems (redundant controllers, fans, power units all hot swappable).
Invest in a good reliable Raid system including enterprise HD’s within the manufacturers specs – you’ll never regret it.
If your data on the LaCie is crucial to you, then buy another 5big and put your drives in (put it in the right place) it should work.

hi Daniel,

your problem lies in either/both large stills with CMYK color space, or/and (this is my guess) H264 files. The P2 and the ProRes are no problem.
First: Bring all media to one format (ProRes) and speed fps, then start editing,
