  • Hi Alex,

you need a Raid system with either FC or thunderbolt, then a FC/thunderbolt switch together with a server and a SAN system to link up multiple computers at the same time accessing one shared storage raid.
It is not that easy than you think.

  • Hi Bryce,

I understand you want to do business, but instead of giving advice, you always want to sell your expertise. This is a free forum, not a cost-free dealing place,

November 9, 2015 at 3:02 pm in reply to: Do I need a raid and how much will it cost?

    Hi Peter,

yes you do need a raid. I would go for a 8 bay raid with raid level 6, like David recommended. Bob’s advice is a good one, but heads in a different direction, worth considering.
You need to do back-up on a seperate HD.
Don’t go for soft raids, go for a decent one – even when it seems to be expensive in the first place.

    Hi Doug,

I don’t think its the drives. If they are certified for use with pegasus, then they should be fine. I think its the controller within the pegasus making the difference between first and second generation.

October 26, 2015 at 6:37 pm in reply to: Next upgrade option for 2012 6-Core Mac Pro?

    Hi Frank,

1000 bucks including hard discs for a decent raid is not very much. A raid system within your environment gives you definetely more speed and more safety. In case of fast rendering your cpu, ram and a good graphic card are more crucial to this point.
To give you an advice: Spend more on the raid and get a thunderbolt raid whith raid level 6.

    cheers

  • Hi Philip,

we are running a R800 for years now. It’s still a good and reliable array. But it is no longer supported. So you should stick to the drive compatability list. Both 3TB and 2TB certified drives of the list are good choices. As a 4tb drive is not on the list, the hd will be most likely not supported.
Best drives for us are Ultrastars.

    cheers

August 6, 2015 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Overall Computer Set-Up // RAID // Adobe Premiere

    Hi James,

Raid0 is no option. The problem with internal raids is the heat!
Over the years it will burn your computer. So go for an external raid.
    13GB RAM? – no good

    – I have a 1TB external USB drive that I’m thinking of using as a time machine backup because of the RAID 0, but the Mac only has USB 2.0. – Good for back-up

    – If I do the time machine back up I’m thinking it would only be for the RAID drive.

    – Should I move the cache to the OS drive – possible

    – Would a FireWire to USB connecter work to increase my external drive to speeds faster than USB 2.0 – no

    – With FireWire 800 would an external drive be faster than an internal drive – no

    I have three 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drives and one 100GB USB 2.0 drive. – back-up

What you need is an external Raid – at least esata with a minimum of Raid5 protection.

    cheers

  • Hi Michael,

Raid0 is no option. With multicam editing you need speed and reliability.
Is your mac equipped with thunderbolt? There are a lot of affordable 4-8 bay raids on the market. Which Os system do you use?

  • Hi Andrew,

HD editing is standard nowadays. So it’s nothing special.
For a comfortable workflow, you need about 400MB/s working speed with a standard HD workflow such as ProRes422. So both your thunderbolt raid and SSD provide you with this. Even USB3.0 is suitable.

    Your set-up:
OS and Apps on my system 1TB – Okay

AE and PP cache on my Lacie. – Possible

Project and raw files on my Samsung SSD. – Use the thunderbolt raid for your files with Raid6.

My WD Thunderbolt Raid is just for backup at the moment after i finish a project unless someone can suggest something better. – Use USB3.0 (3-6TB HD’s are possible) for back-up.

    cheers
