  • I would try this way:
    – Duplicate the keyed picture (V track 2 & 3).
    – To the picture in layer 2, apply the 3W-CC filter and then put all the Luminance and saturation down, to make it black.
    – Then apply some blur, and distort it and low the transparence down.

[Bill Davis] “It’s kinda funny, but the the moment I wrote this I said to myself that somebody here was going to pop up with the same old same old – “but Software X does that too so X is really nothing special!” – I honestly thought it was going to be Harlen. But not this time! (maybe he’s finally tired of making the same comment over and over??)”
    Bill,
You could have started your post pointing out to and interesting article on FCPX/4K workflow, but when you start it with a subject that sounds to old propaganda (“The NLE that keeps moving forward?”), you should expect whatever answer from people that are not so in love with the application.as you are.
You suggest that FCPX is the only NLE that moves forward. Let others think different.

  • [josephine balakrishnan] “Evidentally these 6 lines (bringing in the ProRes ) makes a big difference when I work in Black Magic Resolve. That’s why its important.”
Those 6 lines shouldn’t make no difference at all.
CC applications should be format/definition agnostic.
At least in Apple Color there is no difference on working with Prores 720×480 or 720×486.
The application put out the same size that gets in.
720×486 is only meaningful when you need to print to tape at 10b.

[Trevor Yawner] “The scratch disk I’m using is an older USB 2.0/FireWire/eSATA”
So, from those three connexions, which one are you using?
    USB is a NO-NO.
Any of the two other should work.

[Trevor Yawner] “At this point I need to refine details and the playback is too choppy (dropped frames dialog)”
    Uncheck “Warn on dropped frames”.

[Trevor Yawner] “I’d only like to compress the video for the edit if absolutely necessary”
No need. The FW800 and the eSATA will give you RT performance unless you are working with few layers of Prores444.

  • [josephine balakrishnan] “I just tried to change the presets but the compressor is greyed out on all the presets.”
You are right, the codec can’t be changed.
Sorry, i thought could be possible, because HDV can be captured as Prores through FW, but the preset is not editable.

[josephine balakrishnan] “I know it can be done but i think its off a deck which is expensive since i don’t have one.”
Is not about a desk about an IO card.
is necessary something like a BlackMagic, AJA, Matrox or similar.
Some are quite affordable, however, you won’t get any benefit on capturing that footage as Prores.
The only you will get is four folds bigger files.

    Yeap.
I’ve mentioned the Canopus because is the most popular one due to his low price.
Any device that allows to capture with a better codec will make a better job.
VHS is a very compressed format, so avoiding further compression is the only way to avoid further picture degradation.

  • Try duplicating a DV NTSC capture preset and change the codec for Prores.
If you are capturing from a DV device, I guess you can only capture 720×480.
You need to capture to a fast drive.

November 26, 2012 at 1:53 am in reply to: Converting 1440×1080 to 1920×1080 Properly?

[Kristyn Davis] “I read somewhere that I can edit this image size in 1920×1080 and everything would look fine. I’m assuming to export I would have to specify that I want the image size to be 1920×1080. Is that the best way to change the size and preserve as much quality as possible?”
Edit on a 1920×1080 Square pixels sequence and export a QT movie (no QT Conversion).
    That’s all.
You can also edit and export 1440×1080 and upscale in Compressor, with “Frame Control ON” to 1920×1080 Squared pixels.

The most popular device for the task is the Canopus ADVC 110.

Never used, but I wouldn’t hesitate to give it a try.
