If you have to render QT files, is because the footage and the sequence setting don’t fully match.[Bryan Mailer] “Is .MOV the ideal format for heavy editing?”
Qt files (.mov) are the only directly supported by FC.

The only thing can improve the quality in that workflow, is using the best upscaling filter in Compressor, which is better than the default FC filter.

Nothing new on this process.
Some points are unnecessary, like when chosing Pixels aspect.
When upscaling to 1920×1080, you can chose Square, but you can also check “Default for size” (1920×1080 is always squared), or even you can chose nothing. The movie will always be displayed as squared pixels, unless other thing is specified.

“Ctrl-S” is not any function (may be on PC).

Sure.
You can’t change all the “envelope” without writing a new file.

The new file will have the same name, length etc, but different extension and probably some other metadata (reel number?). Not sure if FC will re-link it.

Unless you have Compressor. 4, don’t use Compressor to export an MP4. Compressor.2 y 3 uses an old fashioned MP4 (Isma profile) very little efficient.

Probably you used the wrong settings.
The most universal solution (PC, Mac,..) is an MP4/H264.
Use MPGStreamclip.
– Select H264 as the compressor.
– Quality slide: All to the left.
– Limit data rate: 30.000 Kbps. Thats Bluray quality.
– Click B-frames and MULTIPASS.
– Frame size; 1920×1080 (unascaled).
– Deselect “Interlaced Scaling” if your movie is Progressive.
– Audio: AAC. 256 Kbps.
If you gonna play from a Mac, you can export a QT/H264 with exactly the same settings.

Hi Pol,
That kind of issues are not often treated on this forum, but is well known that when working with SD and other kind of media that kind of problems may arise and quite often are due to the media class/performance.
If you are not able to L&T, copy the MTS files on your HD.
Then you can try 5DtoRGB (there is a free version) or ClipWrap to convert the files to Prores.

Don’t go the Prores way.
There is an easier and faster way to make your AVI/DV working well on FC and without any quality lost.
You just need to rewrap them as QT/DV.
You can do it just by using the “Save as..” in QT player or in MPGStreamclip.
That just rewrap the A/V information inside the AVI, without any rendering.
You get plain DV/QT.
Of course, when you “Save as..” do it as a “Self-contained movie”, no “Reference Movie”.

I absolutely agree with Jeff.
Offlining makes sense when you are working with something like RAW, a heavy codec or uncompressed stuff.
With the footage you are working with, you will only complicate the workflow.
