If you are upscaling, the best option is to go to Prores to avoid further compression.
When you use Compressor with the “Frame Control ON”, the process is done in Floating Point, so makes sense to put out a 10b codec.

If you are delivering Progressive, the most logical would be deinterlacing in Compressor at the same time you upscale the footage.
If you deinterlace after editing, it wouldn’t make no difference on the plain video, but graphics and other elements (animations, transitions) that have been rendered Interlaced, would need to be deinterlaced too and would lose quality.
Better to edit on a Progressive sequence and make the rendering Progresssive.

As Michael say. FW400 in theory should be able to move Prores, but in the practice may have problems.
In theory, even USB should be able.
Try easing your RT settings.
Set “Unlimited RT”, and “Playback Frame Rate: Dynamic”.

SHAKE still being the best tool available for up/downscaling on Mac.
If you see a copy to sell on eBay, don’t hesitate to buy it. Even if just for this task its really worth.

Prores is not a converter, but the codec you should use when converting your AVCHD stuff.You can try ClipWrap, also 5DtoRGB, and even you can download the PANASONIC AVCCAM QT Component to transcode the MTS files to Prores with Final Cut.

When you “Send to Compressor” from FC, FC still rendering the sequence, so setting Compressor for higher performance will not affect FCs limitations on rendering.
FC is limited in terms of usable RAM (4GB) and CPUs.

If the movie from FC was OK, then the problem is on your conversion for the web.

That should be OK for 3 threads.
Anyway, you don’t need full quality for cutting, and some drop frames won’t hurt you.

But to make what you want, you can try this:
– Open your clip with QT, and Export > Still Sequence.
– Set the number of still you want (Animations traditionally used to be done with 18fps).
– Export.
