MPG2 allows much more quality than DV. Although use a 420 sampling system, this is different than the 420 used by PAL.
Even if I wouldn’t be 422 footage, I would never go to DV except to print to video in DV. Go to DV is expoil all that you have done to yo your footage and graphics. In this case, working with 8/10b Unc, with more reasons.
But out of technicall matters,for me, visually DVD looks better than the original DV file. I think that the people that developed the MPG2 standart the did hit the jackpot. When ever I play a DV film from my computer or vido-desk and I compare it with the same film in DVD, I like more the DVD. The image get a nicer texture.

The only problem we have is the terminology. Chromaticity (tone?) is not a magnitude in terms of video. In video we manage two magnitudes perfectly mesurable: Luminance and Chrominance.
The Luminance carry the brigthnnes information, and is modulated in amplitude. On top of that we add a signal that contais the color information: The Chrominance. We get the Chorminance by modulating in Quadrature the Color Difference component. The amplitude of the Chrominance determine the saturation, and the phase of the Chrominance determine the hue.When you says:

However, they do not all share the same color difference components….Yes they can never share the same “Color Difference components”. and the y can never have the same Luma. THE ONLY THING THE SHARE IS THE PHASE OF THE CHROMINANCE VECTOR. That is what determine the tone in NTSC and PAL. That was the old problem in the NTSC. When demodulating, with any little shift in the phase we will recover the wrong Color Difference components.
In all the gray scale we got Luma but Chrominance=0. Each gray value correspond to a R=B=B value. Yes we have colors, but no Chrominance.:[glenn chan] “- In the case of 0.75R 0.00G 0.00B, let’s assume that the legal range is from 0-1. We could say that
0.75R 0.00G 0.00B is either 100% saturated, which is true if you mean chromaticity”0.75R 0.00G 0.00B are 75% saturated. !00% saturated would be 1R 0.00G 0.00B. The only think is that this color is ilegal, because when you get your video composite signal, you pass the limits established by the NTSC and PAL standard.
Any way, Glenn, as I sayd before, I think we have a terminology problem. I’ve learnt the NTSC and PAL system back in 1985. I’ve got beside me the same old manual I used. Now we all the new digital think, I have to look at the book now and them becouse I get really confused. The think is that in digital it doesn’t exist the Chrominance. Is a concept and a magnitude that only appear when play the video out.

PS: I think that, even with our mistakes and doubts, we must be happy of our knowledge about video. I think that a great deal of the people working in digital video, are really lost. -

MPG Streamclip is not the best progarmm to convert QT to AVI. For that I would just export from QT directly to AVI.(With the QT player, Compressor, FC,..)
MPG Streamclip is perfect for converting from any MPG format to QT or AVI. You can convert from the MPG to a .mov o .avi with any of the codec that you have installed.
And if you want to make MPGs for cable-tv (I don’t know much about) Compressor is what you need.

If I would go to play from a CVCam, I wpould just keep in DV. But if I could, I would play from a DVD. Them I would edit in 8/10b Unc depinding how I have digitalized the B-cam stuff.

In other programms you got the choice (when export with the adequated codec) to export only Alpha (AE, Combustion..).
In FC you can not.
I’ve never tryed but what Mark points is the way. In the end you have to get a B&W image. The Black are the transparent areas and the white the solids. This image you can apply like a matte in a composition.

Try exporting a QT movie (no QT conversion). Open the movie with QT player and them export to .avi.
About the DVD, if you have done a good MPG2 compression, is curious but normally look even better than the original . avi or .mov. The film in the DVD gets a texture les “blocky’ and more agreable than the video.
