Exactly.
Although SL has 2,2 gamma, FC keeps doing the 2,2 Gamma correction.
You can set your screen at 1.8 Gamma, so FC canvas should show the proper gamma.
Your finder will look milky and in QTPlayer you should set “FC Color Compatibility”.

There are many reasons why audio or video can be choppy on FC, but what really matters is how is out of FC.
Export a piece of your footage and see how it sounds on QTPlayer and VLC.

I had that many times and never had a problem.
I guess that is because in MiniDV, audio is not locked, so in theory could be drift, but, up to SONY, impossible to notice by the hearing.
Import the clips to FC and export something. Check if there is any audio offset.
If you can use the FW, That’s a better solution than the Canopus. This would recompress the picture.

That still size is huge.
FC can’t work with something bigger than (more or less) 3000×2000.
Even that is very big if you are putting out 1920×1080.
FC will do the downscaling, and FC is very bad fot that task.Go to Photoshop and downscale the picture.
Don’t make them bigger than 1920×1080, unless you intend to pan/zoom the pictures.
If you wan’t to put out the original size (if you gonna project at 4K) then you need AE or FCPX.
Not sure if Motion can do it.

Preparing video for display?
That sounds to that your Mac is short of RAM.
If you are using lot of stills, increase the “Still Cache”.
Keep only one sequence open in FC.
Close other applications.
In any case, nesting would not only not help but could make things harder.

No one tape based camcorder can be captured through USB. Although the interface is fast enough to carry a DV stream, is not stable enough to capture without hipcups.
Look if the camera has an FireWire connexion, if not, get something like a Canopus DV card.

I don’t know much about PP, but, on MAC, there is an “Export QT Movie” option.
However if you can not open the file on MAC, you need to fix that first on a PC.

Whenever you are connected to internet or not, Apple have no way to know if you have more than one copy of the application running at the same time. Unless you send Apple some reports.

If that is a MBP 17″, look in the left side and see if there is an EXPRESS SLOT.
In that case you can buy an Express/eSATA card (LaCie, Sonnet,..) and plug eSATA drives.
That’s the best option for your mac.

But if you convert to the AIC you recompress a lot your stuff and you will get 32Kbps audio.
I guess you can cut in iMovie without converting to the AIC and then open the project with FCPX and the original footage.
