August 21, 2013 at 2:25 am in reply to: new(?) XDCAM twist on unsupported media msg

[Paul Dougherty] “I’ve been able to screen and convert the footage with the XDCAM Transfer utility after having installed XDCAM Drive Software (VFAM) followed by a new XDCAM Transfer utility. So partial success, but I have two questions…”
If you have been able to get playable “.mov” files that’s all you need.

[Paul Dougherty] “Does XDCAM Transfer only convert to XDCAM flavor Quicktimes? (not ProRes?)”
    No need for CONVERSION.
The SONY files are not converted, just re-wrapped as QT. Those QT are fully supported by Fc for native editing and RT.
If you were working on a PC the clips would be rewrapped as MXF.

[Paul Dougherty] “Ok I see that there is one more thing to install (thought it was part oif the other install) and that is XDCAM EX LOG AND TRANSFER PLUG-IN”
I work with a SONY EX-1 since 2007, and never heard of a EX L&T Plugin”.
XDCAM stuff in FC has never worked through “Log&Transfer”, but through “Import > SONY XDCAM”.

August 15, 2013 at 10:21 am in reply to: Fcp6 gamma snow leopard

[peter crawford] “But didnt you say earlier that fcp hasnt changed the way its gamma shifts?”
I meant that have been fixed the inconsistency on gamma (shifts), when transcoding certain codecs.
Before, when converting stuff like Animation or h264 to Prores, or prores to H264, quite ofyen used to happens a noticeable gamma shift from the original file to the converted. That do not happens any more.
With stuff like the AVID codecs, the problem remains.

[peter crawford] “Can you confirm if im using prores in fcp then i need to enable/disable a gamma setting in the clips info or the sequences compression settings in order for it to display properly.”
Not sure what to tell you. i would make some tets to see if any gamma shift, but I think that if you are using QT.7 (last versions), you shouldn’t see no difference.
With FC.6 they were many gamma issues when transcoding and processing, but that do not happens any more with FC.7/QT Last.
Anyway, in this world of gammas and color space, the only thing tht really works as a valid reference is an external, well calibrated, monitor.

August 15, 2013 at 5:39 am in reply to: trouble exporting for 16mm for vimeo

[Aine Ni Fhaolain] “keyframes every 24 frames”
And why “24” instead of “7” or “37”?
You have no idea on which is the best value, so set it always AUTO and let the software do his job.
    And also always “Multipass”.

[peter crawford] “I thought I resd somewhere that fcp on SL would disregard a custom gamma setting and so therefore always still over correct off the native system gamma??”
Fc always corrected the gamma, and that haven’t changed even for FC.7.
FC is agnostic of the system the mac is running, so no way to know if the system sets the monitors at 1,8 or 2,2.

[peter crawford] “Do you know if motion studio 2 works the same way in regards to gamma shifting.?”
As long as I know, Motion doesn’t apply gamma correction to the viewer.

  • [Shaun Lewis] ” downsized the images to 1920×1080 and when FCP downscale them again I downsized the images, again, to 1080×720 but encounter the same problem!”
Sorry, I didn’t notice on your first post that you were editing at 1980×720.
1920×720 is not an standard size.
If you want to use that size, you must resize the still to that size in Photoshop, then FC won’t rescale them.
Edit on a Prores time-line. Once you export a master, convert it to MP4.

Do you have any strange element in your time-line: Big stills, Motion projects?
Save your project with a new name and try to render again.
