You can use the Quicktime export in AE but I notice I need to apply a gamma compression of like 0.72 when exporting from AE win (or Apple Motion… or anything that links to quicktime libraries except the quicktime player pro itself I guess) to get the same levels as my source out when looking at the result with Quicktime player WIN (or to round trip H264 in AE for that matter).

It’s about 0.91 for Quicktime player MAC when I look in the player the same file that needs a gamma 0.72 to look like the source on windows. If you need it dual platform I guess you can do something between the two gamma wise.

Also currently seems I have to set the quicktime player (not the browser plugin) to GDI safe mode in the Quicktime preference settings when it is generated by AE, otherwise black 0 becomes 16 on my screen. Looks like DirectX wants to play as well otherwise.

Looks like digital video is becoming like print where 30% off is something to expect.

February 18, 2008 at 6:26 pm in reply to: Is DOF simulation possible?

I have not seen anyone do a good job at it with a pure computer vision / image processing basis except with specially callibrated multiple simultaneuous views (eg the Microsoft Research demo uses 5 cameras), or maybe in very particular cases (like a pure pan without object motion as a source).

However often you can do a good job by cutting the image into regions with 3-4 roto masks, setting the alpha to eg 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 and then fiddling with that in SmoothKit ZBlur as your starting Z map base.

February 14, 2008 at 6:41 am in reply to: Is there a cure for Intraframe motion blur?

Hard to say without looking at something

If it’s shooting the ground viewed from an helicopter and the action is basically just camera in motion as per helicopter motion, one idea, (not sure if it will help you), sometimes you can do something with a few trackers that you feed into RSMB PRO and then you turn the Main Image Track checkbox to OFF, Sensitivity to 1 and Blur Amount to like minus 1. If the camera pretty much look always to the same place, maybe you can instead stabilize the shot, apply the RSMB with -1 and then reapply the stabilize motion. Of course if it’s totally blurred it might not be recoverable like that.

Another possibility, is if it’s very short (a few frames), sometimes you can remove these frames and use RE:Flex Morph to create some inbetween frames there.

    Maybe you need
    AElm_2DMVTemplate.mel
    search : AElm_2DMVTemplate.mel on https://www.revisionfx.com/support/faqs/generalfaqs/motion_vectors/#Maya

Also did you tried the compiled version https://www.alamaison.fr/3d/lm_2DMV/lm_2DMV_ref.htm
    OR
    https://www.duikerresearch.com/free/20080110/lm_2dmv.zip
(in case it’s a Mental Ray version issue, is this MR 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 ?)

    James,

All our plugins should be fine
Note After Effects does require AE 8.0.2 update to run on Leopard
