  • Just to be clear: No-one at Apple ever said the translation from FCP 7 to FCP X was “impossible”. The original was “It is not possible to translate from FCP 7 to FCP X with perfect fidelity”. Two prominent community leaders decided to drop the last bit and continually misquote what Richard said.

Bret, what you’re seeing is a limitation of the current FCP X XML. When you have an Event selected, an Event is exported. Project XML is structures a little differently and doesn’t fit in the Event XML format, so it has to be exported as Project XML.

BTW, Xto7 snuck in Event translation in the last couple of months. Officially Event translation is not part of the feature set. 🙂

Xto7 and 7toX have fully supported FCP X 10.1 since October 2013, long before 10.1 was released.

Ben is not correct. Final Cut Pro X’s Events and Projects are based on Core Data with an SQLite database underneath. FCXvr was based on a different database. There is NOTHING of final Cut server in Final Cut Pro X, nor any of FCP 1-7.

That it is core data based was confirmed by Jud Coplan on June 13, 2011 in my initial briefing. It’s not in doubt.

As Michael points out, we’re basically automating that manual process of moving folders to an “Final Cut Events Not Used” folder in accordance with Apple’s own guidelines. We also keep track of the offline folders, which FCP X does not.

Just a comment about the support and price. The good thing is that software prices have come down, so we can sell an app for $5. But the reality is that equates to about 2 minutes of support time. 🙂 Not that we ever think that way (or I wouldn’t be responding here and two posts). We try very hard to find the solution to every problem or refund the money. There is a point where we obviously can’t continue to help when it is almost always, in situations like this, something specific to the customer’s system and not an Event Manager X problem.

Did you also try “Forget mounted devices”. I also had to do that before my drive came back as useful again.

And I did read it 🙂 and even at $25 it’s still 10 minutes of support 🙂 Seriously, I’d be happy to take this up with you again by email, simply because I want it to work for you.

    Hi Don

I had the same problem with my own install, and I’m product Manager! It affected me for days, until I realized the the permissions on the external drive had changed and were no longer my own. Once I fixed that I then had to tell Event Manager X to start over by forgetting missing drives.

Walter, I’ve been writing and presenting on how software will (almost certainly) automatically do some pre-sorting and pre-editing based on metadata. The book should be out late January so you’ll likely have to wait until then, but basically, for the sausage factory shows you’ve all been talking about, the editor won’t see the footage until it’s already at first string out stage. Already happening in reality as you would have seen in the Editor’s Lounge videos.

You laugh now, and I expect that.

I was not trying to address the concerns of the editors in the video. If you thought that you completely, absolutely missed the point of what I wrote. Their concerns – the reality of the changed workplace – was a starting off point to project theoretical future scenarios.

Those editors (like Shane) want producers to give them more time, and that would be great. I don’t expect it to ever happen.

If you read the article, I used the editor’s lounge comments where the editors where lamenting the lack of time, and then broadened the discussion out to considering the two pressures: lack of time (to see all footage, to contemplatively edit) and pressure for more finished rough cuts. Given those pressures are only going to increase, then the technology *is* the solution.

Producers are not going to revert to giving 3 weeks for the 3 week job, just 1 as the editors’ in the video noted. Projecting forward, the fastest system – whatever that maybe (might turn out to be lightworks) will be the one that becomes dominant. ]

I then pointed out that those who are using FCP X are reporting that it is much faster for the work they’re doing than the same work in FCP 7.

If you want practical advice on how to improve your editing today, Steve Martin or Larry Jordan would be your go to guys. If you want some clue as to where we’ll be as creative industries in 10 years, you’ll read me, Oliver Peters and a few others.
