Actually, I have Xpress running on a workstation and the kid wants to buy an academic copy of Media Composer which he’s learning at school.

Thanks. I’ll check my render settings.

In the meantime, when following DSE’s instruction, applying 1.2121 pixel size, the image is letterboxed on the sides, not to and bottom. So my image that is tall and skinny gets taller and skinnier.

I’ve been successful doing a .75 pixel size. But still having problems with render. So I’ll give it a shot.

    Thanks again.

Thanks Jon. You nailed my problem- lots of effects had gone to the C drive thanks to an inexperienced operator.

The advice about Avid works fine. But when I follow recommendations about Vegas, the picture just gets taller and narrower. I tried a 0.75 frame in job properties. That looks fine in the Vegas window.

But when it came time to render out, it was still 4×3 anamorphic.

I’m thinking radio is a whole lot easier. Nobody cares about aspect ratio in radio.

Any advice is welcomed. And if you’re near Montclair, NJ, I’ll buy you a beer.

A year ago I made the jump to Avid from Edit*. And I really miss edit*.

If you offline with Edit*, you should have no problem sending an EDL to Avid. I was always successful using Grass Valley format.

For exporting logs, I’ve moved each bin to a timeline and exported an EDL. The Avid lets you organize the files in a bin. Not elegant. But it gets the job done.

After 8 years with Discreet Edit* (finally with 6.0) I made the leap to Avid Xpress Pro HD a year ago. I miss Edit*’s clean interface and very direct access to trimming. But I don’t miss Edit*’s audio keyframe problems.

My big reason for going with Avid was the offline-to-online workflow. Since making the move, I’ve been very impressed with the ability to send my project file to the Avid finishing house and find all the information on the computer doing the conform. This includes font information with TitleTool and Marquee.

I’d recommend the Xpress Pro HD route for offline if you are moving to Avid Symphony/Nitris/whatever for online conform.

June 6, 2007 at 6:58 pm in reply to: PAL capture problem

Project is a PAL 25 project. The JVC machine is set to PAL. The PAL tape plays very well and looks good in the monitor and with the capture tool. But Avid refuses to capture or log the clips.

Oddly enough, I can import other PAL files from hard drives and Avid will play/edit, etc, just fine. Also, this machine has been used quite successfully in PAL mode with two other NLEs.

And I’ve spent a bit of time on phone with Avid with no success. Makes me want to fire up the old Discreet Edit system one more time.

    Thanks.
