16:9 squeeze?
Posted by Phil Byrd on October 2, 2007 at 5:57 pmCan Vegas reformat an anamorphic image into a letterboxed image? Avid does it by applying an effect to individual clips. Discret Edit* does it with less fuss by applying an effect to a compositing track a level above the top video track. But I can’t figure out how to do the same thing with Vegas. Currently using version 6; about to upgrade to version 8.

October 2, 2007 at 7:19 pmYour Vegas veg project should be set (FILE>PROPERTIES) to “NTSC DV (720×480, 29.970fps)”.
If so, it sounds like your video clip is set to 4:3 so: right click on the clip (in PROJECT MEDIA), select PROPERTIES, and change the PIXEL ASPECT RATIO to “1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)”.
It should automatically letterbox the video.

Actually, in Avid all you have to do is apply it to an empty upper track.

October 3, 2007 at 2:34 pmIn Vegas, you simply set the PAR on the events or project.

October 5, 2007 at 12:25 amThe advice about Avid works fine. But when I follow recommendations about Vegas, the picture just gets taller and narrower. I tried a 0.75 frame in job properties. That looks fine in the Vegas window.
But when it came time to render out, it was still 4×3 anamorphic.
I’m thinking radio is a whole lot easier. Nobody cares about aspect ratio in radio.
Any advice is welcomed. And if you’re near Montclair, NJ, I’ll buy you a beer.

October 8, 2007 at 3:37 pmIf everything was okay in Vegas until you rendered, it could be your render settings were set to 16:9 or maybe you had the “Maintain Aspect Ratio – Do not letterbox” checked.
What type of render are you doing? Maybe MPEG2?

October 9, 2007 at 6:49 pmThanks. I’ll check my render settings.
In the meantime, when following DSE’s instruction, applying 1.2121 pixel size, the image is letterboxed on the sides, not to and bottom. So my image that is tall and skinny gets taller and skinnier.
I’ve been successful doing a .75 pixel size. But still having problems with render. So I’ll give it a shot.
Thanks again.
