Not sure which version of DVDA you’re using but …

with DVDA3 and 4, if you click to select a thumbnail button on a menu, there is a panel to the right of the Preview window “Button Properties”

Beneath this are the following tabs: Transformations / Action / Media / Highlight / Navigation / Color Sets

If you select Media you should see: Button Style / Thumbnail Properties / Frame Properties.

Under Thumbnail Properties are Thumbnail Media and Mask, and beneath that Start Time and Style.

Selecting Start Time reveals a down arrow which when clicked produces a slider which can be dragged to change the pic in the Thumbnail.

    Any luck?

If the Chapter starts at the first video frame, this will happen automatically – if not, select the button then under Buttion Properties / Media / Start Time on the right hand side, grab the Start Slider and you can have any frame showing in the button thumbnail – this won’t be where it starts playing from, just how it is displayed on the menu.

If the slider is not precise enough, either hold Ctrl whilst moving it, or you can type in the exact frame reference.

If you’re doing mainly audio work I assume your sound card has ASIO drivers, so perfect audio synch should be ok – it may be the extra time to process QT is causing a delay with video/audio synch, so I would render a DV avi to use whilst doing the synching.

Also, are you using loop regions to record – that way you can select a passage at a time and Vegas will keep adding new takes automatically till its perfect

What format video are you working with?

Lots of factors can affect lip synch, including your machine’s specs.

In your case, you seem to be referring to “apparent lip synch” – if you know it’s ok after print to tape I wouldn’t worry too much – any time you want to check a passage, drag to create a loop and hit Shift/B for a quick Ram Render

Another thing you could try is reduce Preview quality – what setting are you using?

If you double click the clip in question to “open” it, then look under End Actions in Properties, the same clip’s name should appear – select this and the clip will loop.

Although I use glasses for long distance stuff like driving and watching TV, I don’t for reading or editing!

A larger monitor could help, but have you tried changing the resolution of your existing monitor? Sometimes it’s worth trading off a little screen capacity for larger detail. TFT should be less flickery than CRT, so you’re ok there.

Not sure whether this was in 6.0c, but it’s definitely in 6.0d, which is a free upgrade –

Place the DVD in your usual drive, then
File > Import > DVD Camcorder Disc

Because HDV and its compression makes it hard to edit with on anything but a superfast PC (so far …..) the solution has been either:

Intermediates: This is a misleading name, because Intermediates such as Cineform’s are .avis at full HD resolution, and in fact they take up 3 times as much space. They are created as a render from the original HDV footage, and can be used for easy smooth editing, right through to the final render.

Proxies: Best done with a plug-in like Gearshift, these care widescreen DV avi files which “temporarily” replace the HDV files on the time line. They take up about the same space as HDV. They are also rendered from the HDV files and are quick and easy to edit with. Once the edit is done, a single click in Gearshift replaces the proxy files with the original HDV .m2t files ready for final rendering and output.

The Cineform codec you buy with Connect HD is meant to be slightly better and faster than the one included with V6.

Whether this difference will remain with V7 remains to be seen, plus whether Vegas t Internal Capture will do Scene Detection for HDV, which Connect HD does but V6 does not.

There is also the issue of how relevant Intermediates or Proxies will still be, particularly if, like me, you have a 4 year old PC
