Lip Sync
I use Vegas primarily as an audio editor but, less frequently use for video editing as well. For the first time I tried to do a Looping session. In the past, lip-sync wasn’t important on working with mostly music video type of projects.
I may have my settings wrong but, when I preview a clip in the browser, everything’s in sync but, when I drag the clip onto the timeline and play, lip-sync is off unless I use “print to tape” which takes forever as it has to render. I did that once but, then when I tried to record a voiceover, it required rendering again !
Are there some basic video settings that may have got changed which would effect this?Thanks as usual for your help.

What format video are you working with?
Lots of factors can affect lip synch, including your machine’s specs.
In your case, you seem to be referring to “apparent lip synch” – if you know it’s ok after print to tape I wouldn’t worry too much – any time you want to check a passage, drag to create a loop and hit Shift/B for a quick Ram Render
Another thing you could try is reduce Preview quality – what setting are you using?

I’m using a QuckTime movie. And it’s essential to see properly as the voice talent is trying to match the on-camera talent. So she has to see it accurately as we’re recording so we know that it’s totally in sync, not after we have recorded.
I’ve been using Auto Preview. -
I’m not sure you can do it…there’s going to be some lag between what’s on the screen and the audio being recorded.
But does it matter? As long as the talent is in sync with what she sees on the screen, you can always slip the recorded audio clip to sync to the video afterwards.

If you’re doing mainly audio work I assume your sound card has ASIO drivers, so perfect audio synch should be ok – it may be the extra time to process QT is causing a delay with video/audio synch, so I would render a DV avi to use whilst doing the synching.
Also, are you using loop regions to record – that way you can select a passage at a time and Vegas will keep adding new takes automatically till its perfect

Thanks for that suggestion. I’ll try that, converting to avi.
And yes, I was using the loop regions, recording many takes until perfect and then moving on.

Hey Gordon, Jerry Waters here. Haven’t seen you post before. We have to meet for coffee. I guess you are in DV. The problem in HDV is worse. I know that it is in sync even though it looks out but I sometimes prerender to check. Is rendering a small size file to sync to out of the question?

Remember that the video preview goes out via firewire while the audio goes through your computer’s speakers. There is a setting in Options – Preferences – Preview Device tab that will let you adjust that sync. By default it is set to “4” but you can make it higher or lower as needed for your system. The default has always worked great for me.
