No, it shouldn’t be that difficult – I did the same as you – kept V5 installed, and Vidcap works in V6 just as it did in V5.
In case it helps, I’d download and instal V6.0b – build 115.

V5 is fabulous and reliable.
Possible explanations for being cheap:
May be a non-upgradeable copy from someone who has bought V6.
The vendor may be generous.
May be an illegal copy (!!!)

That is odd.
There is a new tab in Preferences – Preview Device – check that this is set to OHCI 1394 for firewire.

You say “when I finally get to the capture window….” – what did you do to find it?
V6 should be exactly the same with Vidcap, plus it now also has an “Internal” capture utility for capturing HDV or SDI video.
When clicking File / Capture Video you should get a choice of Internal or External – for normal DV choose External and this should open Vidcap.

Make sure that the smoothness setting on ALL keyframes is set to zero – this is a commonly experienced problem, and this has usually been the answer.

Here’s a simple approach
Add the Colour Corrector FX
Using the Complementary colour eye droppers (below and to the left of each circle)
Left hand – click on what should be black (Tyre) – this changed setting to 264.4 / 0.190
Centre – click on what should be mid grey (Drivers headrest thru window) – 342.1 / 0.227
Right – clcik on what should be white (floor) – 304.6 / 0.698
(Figures are Angle and Magnitude boxes)Looks pretty good here!

Elapsed time is correct – estimated time left is not always, though it seems closer in V6 than V6.

Still not clear on a few things.
How much footage did you capture?
Did it appear to capture normally? – any dropped frames?
So, you finished with an avi of XXXX minutes. What file size?
Did it look normal on the timeline?
– just fishing for clues …

I think its all or nothing. Once you get used to it it’s good – particularly showing camera timecode inside each thumnail.
