Serious Capture problems
Posted by Mark Moss on August 3, 2005 at 12:11 amI just upgraded to Vegas 6.0, but fortunately I left 5.0 on my computer in case of any problems. What is the deal with the capture function? I go to capture video and I get nothing at all. The capture window doesn’t appear at all. When I can finally get to the capture window, I get the “Device not available” text in the screen. I am using the same JVC SR VS20 DV deck that I have used with Vegas 3, 4, and 5 without problems. Can someone give me any input on what I might be doing wrong with 6.0 that I wasn’t doing with versions 3, 4, or 5?
Thanks for your help,
Mark

August 3, 2005 at 12:48 amYou say “when I finally get to the capture window….” – what did you do to find it?
V6 should be exactly the same with Vidcap, plus it now also has an “Internal” capture utility for capturing HDV or SDI video.
When clicking File / Capture Video you should get a choice of Internal or External – for normal DV choose External and this should open Vidcap.

August 3, 2005 at 1:03 amThat’s exactly what I do. I go to external, and it does bring up the capture window, but for some reason it doesn’t recognize my JVC deck as connected. However, if I open 5.0 and go to capture, it shows that my deck is connected. I’m puzzled. How can one version see it and the other doesn’t?
Thanks for your help,
Mark

August 3, 2005 at 1:15 amThat is odd.
There is a new tab in Preferences – Preview Device – check that this is set to OHCI 1394 for firewire.

August 3, 2005 at 2:06 amI’m not getting it at all. If I use the default which is external, the capture window will not even appear. If I uncheck the external, the capture window appears, but shows that the device is not connected…..
By the way, yes on the preview tab, OHCI 1394 is selected.
Also, I have Version 6.0 Build 84 if that helps.
Surely it shouldn’t be this difficult should it?
Thank you,
Mark

August 3, 2005 at 2:19 amNo, it shouldn’t be that difficult – I did the same as you – kept V5 installed, and Vidcap works in V6 just as it did in V5.
In case it helps, I’d download and instal V6.0b – build 115.

August 3, 2005 at 2:28 amMark — I saw a similar weird issue like this during testing of V6. What version are you running? Make sure you are running the lastest release (6.0b).
Here’s a solution for you: In your preferences, go to the “video” tab. Make sure “Use external video capture application” is checked, and then click the “browse” button and navigate to VidCap50.exe (in your Vegas 5 directory) and select it as your external capture app. This way, you can launch VidCap 5 and get your work done.
Let me know how it goes for you.

August 3, 2005 at 2:55 amThat’s a pretty good idea Tim. It’s 6.0 build 85 I think. I’ll do the newer version and see if that helps. I’ll also try using the vidcap 5 to see if I can get my work done.
What do I need to do to upgrade to a newer version? Can I still use my 6.0 serial number for the upgrade?
Thanks again for all of your help,
Mark

August 3, 2005 at 3:16 amIf you have V6 installed the update will install over it, no numbers necessary.
