I’ve used the demo and was unimpressed. I’ve been using Shake for 2 1/2 years now and I can pull better grades in that. Granted, you don’t get the GUI that colourists/telecine ops would be used to, but as Shake 4 will have roundtripping from FCP, it will make life a lot easier. You can also use Shake to composite! 🙂
Take a look at the thankyou’s in the front of the Final Touch manual, it says a lot.
I’m grading a friends short film at the moment, and Shake adds that extra polish. It can be very subtle or pull radical grades. It is also resolution independent, so you don’t have to shell out for the 2K version of FT.
Also with FT you need the ATI X800 installed which I think was part due in crashing my G5 recently – The NVidia 6800 went straight back in.

Drop the matte on the video track below the text.
Contol click on the text, then select travel matte luma (Kevin!) from the composite mode.Underneath all this you can have the same matte with a fill for the red lower third.

Even quicker is to set iTunes to 48K and let it do all the hard work.

I never thought I’d look at multiseat when I bought my first FCP setup. Now I’m doing bedtime reading on fibre channel switches!
I’d feel a bit peeved after shelling out quite a lot of money for storage, I couldn’t use Xsan in the future.
I think the key is to remain flexible, buy what you need when you need it, but always look to the future.

Difficult/impossible to work with Xsan when you want multiseat.
Plus with SFP GBICS you can site your XSR up to 3km away!

Would it not be easier to drop the anamorphic footage into a 4:3 timeline then adjust the scale to 133% ?
If the maths is right (don’t bank on it), it should go back, pixel to pixel.Most of my time is going the other way, 4:3 to 16:9 which is just a 133% scale and then adjust up or down as not to clip heads off etc. Plays in real time too.
I can’t prove the workflow thanks to the ATI X800 killing one of my G5s! Back to The 6800 and Final Touch can wait.
