HD and SD compromise?
Posted by Otis F on May 6, 2005 at 1:38 pmHello,
We are a small UK based production company about to upgrade one of our old Avid MC. We already have a FCP HD suite built on a Cinewave card (purchased only 6 months ago and already obsolete-never mind). Most of our work is still acquired on DigiBeta, but we are about to get a Sony Z1 to replace our in house PD150. We have also shot footage on a Varicam which needs to be edited. As yet we have no need for full HD capability; therefore we don

May 6, 2005 at 3:30 pmThe Decklink HDLink is excellent for monitoring HD, although 720p doesn’t fill a 23″ screen, but 1080 does lovely. Due to it’s firmware upgradeability, new features just keep getting added to it. Nice.
For hard drives – forget firewire and just get a big Xserve RAID and forget about it. Really.

For 8bit SD and DVCPro HD, Firewire 800 works beautifully and is MUCH quieter than the X-RAID’s, not to mention much cheaper. I even cut 10bit on them no problem.
But if you really want to fibrechannel, I’m also running the Medea FCR2X here (2TB) and it’s really really fast and I believe it comes out a bit cheaper than the X-RAID’s.

May 6, 2005 at 4:38 pmTrue, but you’re forgetting the shear sexyness of the Xserve RAID! And all the flashing lights.

No, no, no, you haven’t lived till you enjoy the great light show from the Medea’s in a darkened room. 🙂

May 6, 2005 at 5:04 pmBut can you dry your hair with the fans? And also, don’t forget that the Xraid doubles as a weight lifting exercise. That 100lbs really gets your blood pumping as you move it into position.
Indeed, I was impressed with what I saw of the Medea at NAB, but I really like the aluminium look, and the robustness of the Xraid.

May 6, 2005 at 6:02 pmYou silly boys! You’re both wrong!
SATA RAID is the way to go! Waaaaay better performance than FW800 with a price to match and cheaper than Xraid!

Difficult/impossible to work with Xsan when you want multiseat.
Plus with SFP GBICS you can site your XSR up to 3km away!

May 6, 2005 at 7:02 pmI *totally* agree, but multi-seat/shared use and lond-distance storage was not asked in the original post! 😉
