i Tunes purchased music not working in FCP
Posted by Chongo on May 7, 2005 at 3:22 amI am trying to use an i Tunes purchased song in FCP.
The song was originaly delivered in an .m4p format. I imported, and dropped on the timeline. It needed rendering, so I rendered. Then no sound of sign of any sound. So I exported using QT, as a .aif and re-imported that one. Same result (except no need to render it). Am I doing something wrong or had Apple made it impossible to use their purchased music in FCP?-Thanks

You are not licensed to use that music in any way except to listen to it. You can do a search over the past two years in this forum for all the legal discussions, but the short answer is, it’s illegal to use any music purchased via iTunes in Final Cut Pro without proper licensing from the record label, the writer, the artist and any others who are required to sign off on its use.

Did you really expect Apple to allow unlawful use of copyrighted music?
Ripping off music without permission is a crime with severe penalties.

May 7, 2005 at 6:07 amI use music purchased from iTunes all the time as temp tracks. It helps to have a beat to edit to. The temp music is not used in the final product. Just use iTunes to burn an audio disk of the music, then use Finder to open the audio disk. Copy the AIFF file therein to your desktop or a music file, and this can be imported into FC.

May 7, 2005 at 12:47 pmOnce you pull the AIFF file off the CD to your hard drive you’ll have to convert it in QT PRO to 48.000 khz from the CD rate of 41.000. Then you’ll be able to import and use in your FCP sequence.
but of course, there are the legal matters as discussed above…

May 7, 2005 at 1:57 pmYou audiophiles. 🙂 Personally, I never noticed the difference, but you are probably right. Since I was only using it as temp score anyway it didn’t matter for me. And I doubt if there are any legal issues in my using it as such; that’s like saying “You can listen, but you MAY NOT DANCE!”
Love cutting action sequences to Rob Zombie music…

Even quicker is to set iTunes to 48K and let it do all the hard work.
Good job I work for broadcasters with blanket music licences 🙂
