Hi Jeppe,
We have a section on our web site where we post replays of all of the on-line webinars that we create and there are a couple that focus on using BCC and RED in Avid MC hosted by Jeff Grenberg that you might want to take a look at. Jeff shows how to use the 3 Way color Grade filter in at least one of these webinars – try the one labelled Professional Compositing and Titles in Avid Media Composer. You can check them out here:
https://www.borisfx.com/webinar/
Regarding the mask feathering question … if you use any of the built-in masks in the 3 Way Color Grade filter, you can use the built-in feather function in the mask controls group to generate as soft of an edge as you like. Then there is also the key mode, which can be used to isolate pixels in the image based on their HSL values. We’re working on adding support for a custom spline option but if you need that right now you can do a bit of compositing to generate alpha and isolate pixels for color grading – it’s more work but you can still get the job done within RED.
Cheers,
Peter.

Hi James,
It should be working for you … I’m going to have to refer you to our support department. One of the support techs can assist you in sorting this out.
You can contact support by email at support@borisfx.com or by phone at 888-772-6747.
Thanks,

Hi Jeppe,
There is no other way to feather a mask in RED … the recommended workflow is to do exactly as you have done, which is to apply a blur filter to the spline shape.
Having said that, you should be aware that there are several different blurs in RED 5, each with many options. I would suggest starting with the Pyramid Blur and choosing the Pyramid Smoother option in the Blur Quality pop-up.
The result that you are seeing suggests to me that there is something else going on in your comp as you should not be seeing any kind of halo around the edges. Does the spline shape have a border enabled? This might be the source of your problem.
Please feel free to send me a copy of your project and I’ll take a look to see if I can figure out what the source of the problem is.
Cheers,
Peter.

🙂
The BCC Videoscope filter will indeed be included in the BCC 8 OFX for Sony Vegas Pro release.

February 21, 2012 at 7:54 pm in reply to: Boris red 5 paint and particle system malfunctionHi Eddo,
I’ve responded to you privately about this but so that we can help others in the Creative Cow community who may encounter this issue, here’s a description of the problem and the solution:
• Problem:
a paint layer, used as a production foundry layer in the particle system filter within RED was unexpectedly being clipped horizontally and did not span the full size of the compSolution:
• the paint filter needed to have a media track in order to work as a Production Boundary layer
• first create a new layer / track, then nest the paint track onto the face of this layer. Then use the new layer as the Production Boundary.Cheers,
Peter.

February 21, 2012 at 7:50 pm in reply to: Wondering where is BCC 8 support for Sony Vegas…Hi Steve,
Hmmm … sorry to have to tell you this but the 3 Way Color Grade filter will not be included in the initial BCC 8 release for Sony Vegas Pro. We would love nothing more than to include this filter but there are host issues that (currently) prevent us from doing so.
That said, all is not lost.
You can download and install Boris RED 5 for Sony Vegas Pro. The BCC 3 Way Color Grade filter is included in RED 5 so you can access that filter in your Sony Vegas Pro timelines right now if you install Boris RED.
Cheers,
Peter.

Hi,
Where are you setting the render size? Are you scaling on the host output or changing the host project settings? What host are you using?
Thanks,
Peter.

What happens as you drag through the timeline … do more particles appear?
Please feel free to send me the RED settings project (without media) and I’ll take a look at it. You can send that to me at peterm@borisfx.com.
Thanks,
Peter.

Hi Dan,
We’re working on an update to BCC 8 so that we can extend the supported host list for this filter set to include Motion 5. I don’t have an exact date that I can offer just yet but I can tell you that it’s in the works and that we’re making good progress toward our goal of a product release.
I you subscribe to our (free) newsletter you’ll automatically be notified when the release happens – you can sign up for the newsletter on our website at borisfx.com. Or you can just check back in either here on the Creative Cow or on our web site (borisfx.com).
Cheers,
Peter.
