The yellow bar that you are seeing represents the frames that have been cached to disc. The cache happens every time you move to a new frame. Once the frame is cached, it can be retrieved by the application without delay and this is why it plays in real-time / normal speed.

When you press the spacebar or click on the play button, you are causing RED to traverse the timeline and cache all of the frames.

When you select Preview to RAM you also cause RED to traverse the timeline and cache all of the frames.

So why choose one over the other you may ask? Well one of the reasons is that when you select a Preview to RAM, you can preview a portion of the timeline. Just click anywhere in the UI while the Preview to RAM is building the frame cache and RED will loop the frames that have been cached. It’s a very handy way to work. You can also set the workspace area and use this to set the area that will be cached during a Preview to RAM. This is not possible when you simply use the spacebar or press the play button to preview the result. With the spacebar or the play button (same function actually) you have to preview the entire timeline to return a looped playback.

Hi,

In order to see the video at normal speed, you need to use the preview to RAM button instead of the spacebar play function. To do this, while in the RED interface select:

• Preview>Preview to RAM

or

• Control + 0

I’m curious to find out if this is possible … perhaps you could try.

• create a project at the desired FPS
• import the footage into that project (clip FPS different from the project)
• apply RED to a track above the footage
• create the effect
• render

Does this generate the correct result?

Hi,

It may be that RED is not being handed the correct frame rate by the host. Try this:

• go to the clip to which you have applied the RED effect and enter the RED UI
• select Edit>Project Settings
• enable the option to manually set the Pixel dimensions, FPS and PAR
• manually set the FPS to 59.940
• click on the OK button to apply the change and re-render

Currently there is no support for audio tracks in RED 5 64 on Windows so what you are seeing is normal. You can still import audio into RED 5 32 bit though and we’re working on trying to bring that feature into RED 5 64 – hopefully we will be able to offer that in a forthcoming update.

The files in this folder are copies of the Boris product installers that you have run on that system – you can safely remove these from your system to free up disc space.

As you can see, you can use the program in both plug-in and standalone operation. As a plug-in, you have the advantage of the effect always being editable on the timeline. As a standalone, you have better performance. You can render out a movie or still image from the standalone, then import that back into the Vegas timeline. Or you can save out the project as standalone, then apply the plug-in filter to a clip in Vegas and them open the saved project from within the plug-in. As you can see the program is quite versatile. 🙂

Here are some more answers:

(a) The tutorials that feature hosts other than Vegas will provide you with a lot of useful information regarding use of Boris RED. I think they are well worth your time to watch.

(b) Boris Continuum Complete 7 (BCC7) is included with Boris RED. The current version of Continuum Complete is BCC8 and many of the more recent webinars will highlight some filters that are not included with BCC7.

(c) I would have expected better performance than you are seeing on that system but it might be that this is simply a fact of life for that configuration. Have you tried using the RED standalone (RED Engine) to see if you experience the same level of performance when Sony Vegas Pro is not running? If you have a lot of other applications running while using RED or Vegas you may see a decrease in performance as information is swapped in and out of memory.
