Hi Richard,

The on-line knowledge base for RED is located on the RED product page on the BorisFX web site. If you go to http://www.borisfx.com/product/red/ and look to column on the right side you will see a link labeled Online Help. If you click this link the electronic help system, aka knowledge base, will open up in a new window of your web browser. The knowledge base contains everything from the printed manuals and more. Because it is searchable and easy to keep up to date, we chose this approach over printed manuals. You can also access this same information if you launch RED and then from the help menu select Boris RED help. If you go to the Reference Information section of the help system, you will find detailed information on each parameter along with information for each separate tab. Have you seen this section yet? If you have and feel as though this is not enough please let us know so that we may improve upon it. With regard to training, there are a couple of pretty good DVD’s available which might help you in getting a better grasp of the product. I agree learning a new product can be difficult, especially one as complex as a compositing system. We will do what we can to post more tutorials in an effort to make the product easier to grasp.

You can also use the BCC Pixelchooser as a levels effect – simply apply the Pixelchooser to the clip and select threshold from the matte type pop-up in the matte section.

Hey Larry,

The answer is yes, you can do that for sure … you’ll have to use the jitter function to randomize the baseline position. This function is on the jitter tab in he controls window, which is only visible when the face sub-track of a text track has the current selection in the timeline. You just need to change the value of the jitter position y parameter. You can unlock it from the position x if you want to by clicking on the lock icon.

Hi Larry,

The soccer ball is simply the default media image and has nothing to do with the unlock code in the trial version, which renders and X watermark over the image after the initial trial has expired. Once you enter the unlock code, the X should disappear.

The soccerball will actually be replaced with the video track from the timeline of the editing application once the effect has been applied. If you want to you can delete this track by selecting it and pressing the delete / backspace key on the keyboard. Or you can just disable the display of the soccerball by clicking on the eyeball icon in the timeline on the background track, next to where it shows V1.

The text can be set in Graffiti as you would set text in any text generator. Once you have entered the text that you want to work with, you can select the face track (it’s in the master track so you have to click on the little triangle next to the track name in the timeline) and you should then see that the controls window displays all of the parameters that you are looking for – justification parameters, type-on parameters etc. You might want to take a look into the on-line help system which offers a clear description of how to use this feature. To access the help system, click on help>Boris graffiti Help and the electronic help will be displayed in a web browser.

Very easy to do with RED, but it requires two filters. Simply add the hue-sat-lightness filter to the clip that you want to change and set the saturation parameter to negative 100 (-100). Then add the brightness-contrast filter to the clip and set the contrast value to positive 100 (100). Then you can use the lightness parameter in the hue-sat-lightness filter to control the values that you want to threshold.

I should have been more clear in my response and stated that the filters that ship with After Effects can’t be used with another non-Adobe host, such as Combustion, FCP, Digital Fusion or the Boris product line. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi,

I just took a look at this and well, it appears as though you have discovered an issue with OpenGl and the snap function in RED. To use the snap function in RED, you will have to temporarily disable the OpenGl preview, which you can do dynamically without having to restart the application. To disable OGL, select Preview>Open GL Mode>Off. Then you should notice that the snap function will operate as expected.
