    Hey Tony,

Delighted to hear that you were able to figure that out. And thanks for letting me know. If you run into any problems with the software just drop us a line.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi Tony,

We’d like to replicate the result that you are seeing in house so that we can offer you a solution – would it be possible for you to send me the FX project settings file so that we may take a look at it? You can send the file to me at and I’d suggest zipping the file before sending it through the email. No need for the media, just the settings file.

Meanwhile, you might want to experiment in changing the “better quality field rendering” setting in the project window to see if that changes the result.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi,

To generate that effect I’d suggest trying the BCC clouds filter or the BCC 2D Particles filter. Both are capable of the effect that you describe. The BCC Caustics filter can also generate smoke particles, but not the type that you are looking for.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi,

I don’t have an Adrenaline system available to me at this very moment but I will ask our QA department to investigate the issue and get back to you with the results. Meanwhile, if anyone else out there has a similar set up perhaps they might run a quick test for you and share their findings with the group.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi John,

In the meantime, if you can at least gain access to the BorisRED user interface, you can disable OpenGl by selecting Preview>Open GL Mode>OFF. I suspect that you should then be able to continue to work with RED without error once you complete this step. As Ben pointed out though, you should check the driver and video card for compatibility with both Avid’s host system and the Boris RED effects package. The most importing thing for you though is to ensure that you remain compatible with Avid’s specs as you can always run RED without the OpenGL functionality as I have described above.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi Tony,

I just checked with engineering and QA and they have run a couple of quick tests that show that BFX 9 is indeed operating as expected in Vegas 8. We have not yet had time to run a full fledged test with this host configuration but we have plans for this in the pipeline and will issue a point release to correct any issues that we discover that are on our end if necessary.

Meanwhile I hope you enjoy using the BFX software in the Vegas 8 host system and please feel free to contact me if you run into any problems.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi Tony,

Let’s see what we can do to help ease your frustration with the product. But first a brief explanation … FX is a plug-in, but the application can also be used standalone (by running the Keyframer) on any machine without a license to generate settings files and create effects. FX does not include a render option and relies on the host to complete all render tasks.

So … how can I help you to get the most out of your purchase? I’d like to see you working with the product inside of Vegas, generating effects just like you had envisioned when you made the purchase. Please write me either publicly on this list or in private [peterm@borisfx.com] and let me know what is not working for you. I was unaware that Vegas 8 was released and if we are not currently supported in that host level I suspect that we will add support with a free upgrade very soon. We’re that kind of a company – customers first and a fast turnaround in response to reported problems, whenever possible.

Meanwhile, is there any way that you can use Vegas 7 while you wait for the patch for Vegas 8?

    Cheers,

    Peter.

September 19, 2007 at 5:22 pm in reply to: FX 9.1 – Styles

    Hi Alan,

I’m not totally sure what the problem is that you are describing but I would like to help. Here’s a brief overview of the paint in FX 9:

Paint in BFX 9 is 100 percent vector based and is linked to a spline shape drawn by the user. WIthout the spline the paint cannot exist – deleting the spline deletes the paint stroke associated with that spline. You can use the hollow arrow tool to select and deselect paint strokes just like you can with any other spline shape. If you change the paint stroke attributes / style, all new strokes will use this style. If you want to remove a style attribute from a stroke, select the stroke with the hollow arrow tool, then go to the controls window and edit the controls – ie, turn on or off the fill, border or brush in each respective tab.

I hope this helps – please feel free to email me directly for more detailed instructions [peterm@borisfx.com] or you can send me a project settings file which I can modify and send back to you.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

September 19, 2007 at 1:01 pm in reply to: Boris FX – Have I switched off something?

    Hi Douglas,

Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention – we have reproduced the issue and have assigned an engineer to work on a resolution, which will most likely arrive in the form of a point update to the Boris product line.

From what engineering has told me, the problem is that something in the API that is used by Liquid was broken in a recent release (actually we think the problem might extend back as far as Liquid version 6.1), which means that we will need to work with Avid’s engineering team to see exactly what is broken and how it can be fixed so that we can once again lock in and get the correct project size and frame in time.

    Cheers,

    Peter.
