    Hi Alan,

Sorry, my mistake, I meant to write that you can do this within BorisFX 9 using the included BCC Film Damage filter.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

November 15, 2007 at 7:46 pm in reply to: RED and Title 3D issues in FCP S2

    Hi Dave,

Well currently RED will only operate in 8 bit mode when rendering from within FCP. If you’re working standalone in the RED engine of course you can control the bit depth using the 8/16 button in the composite window.

The benefits to working at a higher bit depth are that you will see less banding with gradients and color will pass through the system more cleanly, meaning that there will be fewer roundoffs in the math, with the end result being greater color fidelity from start to finish. How much this matters is subjective – for some pieces, actually the majority of pieces, that you are producing in SD you’ll never see the difference with the naked eye.

So getting back to the problem that you reported, we’ll have to reproduce this in house on our test systems before we can offer any kind of resolution. With that, if you could please make available to us via ftp the project and a few frames from the render we’ll take it from there. Please send the project to us at support@borisfx.com and cc me (peterm@borisfx.com). It might take a few days to sort this out but rest assured we’ll work with you on this to find a solution.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

Have you tried the BCC Damaged TV filter? There are a myriad of features within this filter that with the right combination might provide the look that you are searching for.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi Dave,

Are you by any chance working in 16 bit? Have you tried to generate the title in the RED engine in 8 bit and if so were the results still unsatisfactory?

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Hi,

Can you describe what this effect would look like? I know you said that you wanted to make the clip appear as though it originated on VHS but it’s a little unclear to me exactly what this would look like. If you can send more information I’ll gladly take a look and see if there is something in our toolbox that will generate this look.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

November 15, 2007 at 3:40 pm in reply to: BCC5 FXPlug causing FCP to crash on ETT

    Hi Sam,

We have not yet tested the FCP update in our labs and cannot say whether this update will fix the ETT crash that you have been experiencing with FCP and FxPlug filters. We can test this next week though and will certainly let you know whether or not the issue was addressed with this update as soon as we have had a chance to test it.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

November 13, 2007 at 9:08 pm in reply to: BCC5 Chroma key semi transparent after a render

    Hi Jeremy,

I just keyed a blue-screen clip using the criteria that you have mentioned with BCC FxPlug and had no problems at all. The final render looked exactly the same as the preview in FCP.

One thing to ensure is that you are using the BCC FxPlug filters and not the BCC AE filters.

So … there may be a difference in the project and with that I’d like to ask you to send me a copy of the timeline and also a few frames of the media that you are using so that we are both looking at exactly the same thing. Please send this to me via yousendit ftp service (yousendit.com). My email address is peterm@borisfx.com.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Hi Jeremy,

We’ll take a look at that right away and see if we can reproduce the issue tat you are describing. Can you please tell me whether you are using PowerPC or MacIntel hardware?

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Should be happening very soon. I can’t provide a date but it’s close.

    Cheers,

    Peter.
