Panasonic must relase a low-cost DVCPRO100 player to keep the format viable. Let’s face it, most programs like TVC’s and corporates never have to go to tape-out once they are ingested. There should be a Sony J3-style player available with basic RS-422 control and HD-SDI outputs. I myself won’t buy a HDX900 becasue of the high-cost playback device needed to output video.
“Yes” you might say, that’s what P2 is there for. But I shoot a lot of long-form material and don’t necessarily want to back up every day after (or during) a shoot. Last week on a doco shoot I shot five hours of interviews a day for five days (on a SDX900). If I can’t go for a HDX900/cheaper player combo, then I will seriously look at the Sony 700 XDCAMHD.

Yep long time no hear. Geez, sorry I didn’t do that large file upload test for you. My short term memory loss served me well there. Sorry.
Umm…back to the business at hand. I think I might be stuffed and the client may have to get a deck. I don’t want to compromise the quality of the material. If I’d digitised in 10bit AVI, I might be tempted to convert to QT from Premiere. Think I’ll have to buy a Mac for special jobs.

I’m using am eight-core E5420 setup with Intel D5400XS Skulltrail and it uses all eight cores on most renders.

I just shot two TVC’s on the 3000 in AVC-Intra 100. I used Premiere Pro to edit the footage but I had to convert the clips to uncompressed AVI’s first. I’ve heard about the slowness of converting in FCP, but in Windows it only took around 15 minutes to convert 40min of footage.
I must say the 10-bit 1920×1080 AVC100 footage looked extraordinary and if I could get over the clip management and backup issues, I would use this camera more often.

Hmmm. Just looking at your post again Dennis and the Arri brochure, would the open face lights be better for softbox use or do you find the direct lighting ability of the Fresnel’s more useful?

Thanks all for the info (and Dennis for the Arri 2K insight). The Jokers look great but $5900 for a kit. Ouch! HMI is out of my budget range I think.
I’ll check the Arri 650 Fresenel and the LT Pepper 650’s, plus medium Chimera. With the new 2K coming in Fall, I guess that means end of 2008/start 2009 for us Downunderers?

Isn’t the HVX200 a 1/3″ x 3 CD and whilst the 500 uses a 2/3″ x 3 CCD derived from the SDX900? Maybe not “HD” but streets ahead of the HVX200.

On many jobs it’s just not posible to take a data-backup guy along on a shoot. On all the overseas wildlife shoots I do, there is no way the clients will pay for an extra additional assistant for long periods away. I agree for larger budget docos and corporates, a separate data-specific person would be great, but it’s not that I “haven’t planned the crew corectly”.

Getting back to the original thread, it’s not a question of having a drink in Dubai, Jordon, Mexico, Japan, etc etc, but having to stay in your hotel room backing up and managing data while your crew is not. The “beer” is a metaphorical response to a technical and logistical problem.
If Panasonic would release a low-cost J3-style DVCPROHD player-only, I would probably head towards the HDX900 or an H-series Varicam. So at the moment I wait and continue shooting tape on my SDX900. For commercials I’m more than happy to shoot P2 HD.
