Wow, thanks. Now, if only I could understand what you’ve done in your code… 🙂 I’ve been reading it and browsing the references, and I have two doubts in particular:
1) The “tolerance” variable has the angle… in radians. Am I right?
2) I’ve read the AE Expressions Reference several times (both today and in the past, when I had to solve similar problems), but I’ve never been able to understand exactly what the “velocity” attribute is, much less when it talks about it being “the tangent vector value” of the position (I’ve half-forgotten my high-school trigonometry). Without getting into a remedial math class, am I wrong if I suppose that “velocity” is a sort of vector that points in the direction of the object’s movement?

Okay, guess what? I tried with Toast 7 Titanium and… it worked. All I had to do was to get it to recognize the camera as a “NTSC DV camera” (instead of “PAL DV” as it was its default), and that was it. So here it is, for reference of future users…

Thanks. Tri-Catalog does sound interesting… but it seems to be optimized for photos. It supports reading IPTC and EXIF fields from files, but they don’t say whether it can do the same with metadata embedded in Quicktime files. Guess I’ll have to ask them.

You need to load new drivers from Panasonic’s site in order for it to read 16Gb. cards. I don’t remember the address offhand, but it’s been posted several times in the Panasonic P2 forum.

In “Device Control Preset”, aside of “HDV Firewire”, which is the one you’re using, there are also others presets, named “Sony HDV Firewire” and “Sony HDV 1080 Firewire” (or something like that). Have you tried those?

Are you sure you can’t transfer 720p24 footage through Firewire? I’m using the HVX200 in PAL-land, but here we shoot in 720pn25 and can transfer the footage (including slow-motion clips) with FW without any problems. You just have to put the camera in “1394 device” mode, in which you’ll access it as if it was an external drive. Neither the computer nor the camera cares about whether the footage is 24p or whatever; as far as they are concerned, they’re just computer files. Are you sure the HPX500 doesn’t have that option?

Oh, okay. Now I’ve reread your post and see that you already know about the 5-slot card reader, and even how much it costs… 🙂 Nevermind then. (You can still connect your camera through FW to the MacPro, though).

The DuelAdapter thing is for *MacBook Pros*, i.e., laptops. For a MacPro… you could either connect the camera through Firewire to the computer and transfer from there (the card will show up on the Mac as a FW removable drive) or buy/rent a Panasonic card reader (don’t remember the product ID offhand): it’s a 5-slot card reader with FW and USB connections, and I think it costed above 1000$.

When I talked about “the facility I’m working with”, I meant the company that usually handles tape transfers for us. They told me they are a PC shop, so the best they could do was an uncompressed AVI (well, the guy also told me that he could transfer it to a DVD, since “it would have better quality than DV” (WTF???)). Ideally I’d like to have it in DVCPRO50, but the only tape-based format that we can read is MiniDV.
The workflow I’m thinking of, once I’ve got the uncompressed AVI, is to take it to my PC at home, extract the clips I want to smaller uncompressed AVIs, take them to the Macs at work, drop them into Compressor and convert them into DVCPRO HD Quicktimes. And *then* import them into FCP. (I know, I know).
