I was advised in this forum to digitize it to DVCPRO HD, since that’s what the rest of my project uses; it’s about ease of use, not getting HD where there wasn’t any HD to begin with.

As for using AVI… well, the facility I’m working with is a PC shop, so that’s what they use. I’ll probably select the clips that I want, “cut” them out with QT Player or Virtualdub, and then reencode all of them to DVCPRO HD.

    Sure. Go to:

    https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm

I’m glad to see that they redesigned the site and it’s now quite clearer than a month ago, when I was bitten by the same problem and spent an afternoon lost in their website…

I agree with you, and if it was up to me I’d be doing it in AE, but the editor I’m helping with this thing just wants a quick-and-dirty matte, which is good enough for his (and my) manager. Apparently, their deadlines are so tight that they don’t even have time to export each sequence to AE and put each shot into a separate layer (well… I’m writing this as if that was easy, but it can add up to a lot of work, and no, we don’t have Automatic Duck). We also tried using “send to” Motion and doing the mattes in Primatte, which would be much easier when it comes to workflow from FCP, but my colleague wasn’t convinced with the results.

Mmmm… good question! Guess I was stuck in the “if it’s SD, capture it in SD” mindset.

And what if they can’t capture it to media files, but only transfer it to another tape? My boss asked me the other day about transferring it to HDV and I flatly said no: both HDV and DV are 4:2:0, so the added color resolution of Betacam would be lost anyway, and the added pixels (1080i vs. 720×576) are useless, since they aren’t in the source in the first place. So it will have to be either DVCPRO HD or MiniDV, I guess. Am I right, or would HDV give me some advantage that I’m not seeing?

I have had 10.4.8 running on several computers for quite a long time, and it hasn’t given problems. I only have 10.4.9 running on one computer, and although it seems to be working fine, it’s been at it only for a few weeks. Better the devil you know, etc. (Did I mention that we have a very important shooting out of town next week? 🙂 ).

Thanks. I did find it a bit after I posted. It’s the same link than the one for the Windows drivers in the “Driver software” table… except that the “Mac” column isn’t linked. The only mention that the Mac drivers are there too is below, in the part where it says “Driver Software for Windows PC and Mac” (and then says “This driver software is required for PC to recognize the P2 Card” (no word about Macs), and *then* says “Please prepare:1.PC or Mac”…)

Anyway, I installed the drivers (which are version 1.03) in the Powerbook (which had the v1.01 drivers), and it worked. My only nagging doubt is that the instruction sheet by Panasonic says that the drivers need OS X 10.4.8, but the Powerbook still has 10.4.5; neverthless, everything seemed to work. Should I upgrade to 10.4.8 anyway?

Uh? The link you posted goes to the same page than mine, and the “Go to download” link goes to the drivers for the HVX-200 cameras. I’m talking about drivers for OS X, for a Powerbook to recognize the 16Gb. card and transfer the data to it.

Thanks a lot. Now the other question, for anyone who has upgraded: is there any caveat when it comes to camera operation with the new firmware? We are using the PAL models, have an extremely important shoot this weekend out of town and the boss decided at the last minute to buy a new 16Gb. card. I’d have liked to test the camera a bit after the upgrade, before using it in an actual shoot, but we won’t have time. So: is there anything different I need to know? Menus in different places, auto modes reacting in a different way… anything.

Nope. Internal drive, working perfectly. AFAIK, the only thing he did was to press a button with a red cross that unlinks the layer from the external footage (I don’t know Shake), but that shouldn’t delete the actual footage!

The only other person I know of that had this happen was this guy (message from this board, last August). I know it sounds bizarre…

May 16, 2007 at 12:53 pm in reply to: Cluster rendering: what’s wrong?

Thanks for the answer. The instructions in your link are for setting up a cluster manually (as opposed to a QuickCluster), which is what I did at first: configure a master computer, “services only” nodes, etc.; and the resuts I got were so disappointing (a 17 sec. clip took 2 minutes to export, vs. 40 sec. in a single computer) that I decided to set everything up as a QuickCluster and leave the default options. Apparently, it hasn’t worked too well either…

Those of you using render clusters: are you all using Gigabit Ethernet? Is there any other trick I’m missing?
