  • Problem capturing HDV from Sony HDR-HC3

    Hi,

I have a Sony HDR-HC3. I also Have FCP 5.0.4. I want to capture HDV into FCP. The camera is set for HDV OUT thru i-link. My FCP settings are as follows:

Sequence preset HDV – 1080i60 (this is NTSC 29.97 stuff)
    Capture Preset HDV
    Device Control Preset HDV Firewire

PROBLEM: When I try to log and capture I cannot see any video, though it will capture audio. When I look at the “captured” materials’ information in the browser there is no text in the COMPRESSOR column, which leads me to think, there’s no video here. Plus the size of the file is reletively small accounting for the Audio (I assume).

If I switch to HDV- Apple intermediate Codec (which I read seems to be the correct one) I can indeed capture video and audio but cannot control the deck (camera), nor can I set in and out points etc. It just immediatley enters “HDV Capture” mode and wants me to name the file. When I do, it just starts capturing until I hit ESC. Again I do have video and audio but that’s no good when I have dozens of clips to grab all thru the tape.

ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS????? Thanks so much. Headache worsenning by the second.

Perhaps you can try resetting the i-link/firewire port to HDV one more time on the camera. In most Sony HDV units you need to control the firewire output yourself, it is NOT an automatic detection deal, and it needs to be reset without the FW cable connected to make the change. So just for kicks turn off the camera and computer and disconnect the firewire cable. Turn on the camera in VTR mode and open the menu, find and enter the rec in/out, find and open the i-link conv, and set this to OFF for HDV. Reconnect the FW cable and reboot the computer, open L&C
    Hopefully this is your issue.

No, I’m afraid that wasn’t the cure. A good idea though. Still can’t control the deck in Intermediate codec and can’t see video in HDV codec. Thanks for the effort. Any other ideas?

I think there’s a separate device control protocol for Sony HDV. Is that what you’re using?

    All the best,

Not sure what you mean by Device control Protocol…could you clarify or offer an example?

In “Device Control Preset”, aside of “HDV Firewire”, which is the one you’re using, there are also others presets, named “Sony HDV Firewire” and “Sony HDV 1080 Firewire” (or something like that). Have you tried those?

yes, I’m afraid that is not the case either. Does anyone know of a service where I can call to troubleshoot this kind of thing? Even if I have to pay, I’ve just got to figure this out.

    Thanks
