there are plenty of stockfootage clips of light leak footage and old film trailers, scratches etc….it’s easy enough to use a compostie mode or displacement map to merge the two together.

google might even come up with one you can dowload – maybe for free

I’m also sure there is a pretty hefty license fee with such copy protection as macrovision etc…. It’s so easy for anyone to circumvent copy protection on DVD’s these days that it may not actually be worth your while or the expense to do it correctly.

  • oops that would of course be Ron and not Rob!!!

agreed it’s still vapourware – but would be nice to have a place to pick the brains of those lucky enough to get to NAB and who have talked with the RED crew…there was a Motion Forum months before the app actually shipped – granted there was a lot more substance to motion than say where RED is currently at.

anyway just a thought – dont want to clogg up this forum with RED questions and discussions

April 25, 2006 at 1:07 pm in reply to: FCP on new Macbook versus waiting for towers…

the towers are always going to be more beefy than a laptop – dual processors, better graphics cards, I/O etc…. but the macbook pro is here today and the towers are somewhere off into the distance. Personally I’m waiting for the intel towers and then for the dust to settle before making the switch, but that’s because my current machines are plenty fast enough for the timebeing (G5 2.0g)….the museum piece you are currently working on – would make me consider upgrading to something 🙂

even a low spec imac would be faster than your current machine….a faster machine is likely to make you more productive meaning you could cover the purchase with a couple of jobs.

an interim purchase of a G4 laptop, low end G5 tower could be a good interim measure – you will definetly notice the speed boost…and then jump on the G5 intel machines when they arrive.

pretty much need a plugin for this effect….Boris, Sapphire and trapcode all have plugins that create this effect….boris and sapphire work in FCP, trapcode shine only works in AE.

you might be able to get someknd of effect similar by using a combo of glow, blur and possibly a displacement map and making multiple copies of the clip. to get the movie trailer effect – i think you may have to spend some cash to acheive it

I’ve found also adding the multiply composite mode to the slug with an oval applied, gives a nice subtle vingette look. on a shot by shot basis you can also use the soft edges filter under the matte category in the filters tab

also make sure that in your sequence settings under the video processing tab that motion filtering quality is set to best (this takes advantage of FCP5’s new scaling algorithm).

having said all that you will always get some level of jaggies when you use that filter…it’s better than it was…but no where near what you would get in AE or Boris RED

April 12, 2006 at 11:39 am in reply to: booting from install disks?

after several attempts the install off the disk option allowed me to install osx on my second internal drive. this allows me to see the problem drive and i can copy the files from it to my second internal drive.

do you know which files i should copy across ie my fcp pluggins folder or is it better to reinstall these from scratch?

    thanks
