light leak effect?
Posted by John Adams on April 24, 2006 at 10:10 pmI’m in need of a light leak effect (ie. blown out edges of flickering/strobing white, red, orange)– does anyone know of a plugin or bit of video trickery to achieve this?
I know I can do this in After Effects but I’d like to keep the footage in FCP5 to save time.
Cheers

April 24, 2006 at 10:52 pmpretty much need a plugin for this effect….Boris, Sapphire and trapcode all have plugins that create this effect….boris and sapphire work in FCP, trapcode shine only works in AE.
you might be able to get someknd of effect similar by using a combo of glow, blur and possibly a displacement map and making multiple copies of the clip. to get the movie trailer effect – i think you may have to spend some cash to acheive it

April 25, 2006 at 1:21 pmIf you’ve got motion, you could take that slit scan thingie and put it on a side, warp it around to look like what you want.
Aside: isn’t it funny the way people like making video look like a fim person’s worst nightmare? scratches, light leak, etc

April 25, 2006 at 2:27 pmthere are plenty of stockfootage clips of light leak footage and old film trailers, scratches etc….it’s easy enough to use a compostie mode or displacement map to merge the two together.
google might even come up with one you can dowload – maybe for free

April 26, 2006 at 10:12 pmthanks for the tip about the trial vesion of Sapphire. Some very cool stuff. Unfortunately it’s not quite what I’m looking for, but fun nonetheless. Thanks.

April 26, 2006 at 10:18 pmthanks for the advice — i’ve opted to just go with creating my own blow outs, scratches and leaks in AE, then compositing them over top the original video in FCP.
I found GenArts had some stock footage that was perfect but I don’t have the dosh or the time to order it. Maybe for the next project…
Thanks for your tips.
