Advice?Without digging around, not sure if fcp5 will work on SL but I’m 99% positive that you can upgrade to FCS3 from version 5. At Amazon, it’s only $265 for the upgrade. Well worth it if you have the cash.
I also imagine that people that follow my response will tell you that you will definitely want to invest in an external hard drive. It’s never advisable to cut off your internal OS drive.

Conor,
I’ve been searching all over for people that edit with the DS4600 and can’t find many. I know it’s relatively new but that kind of scares me. I’m very curious about it. I know you just got yours but curious what you think of it.
I would use it via esata and my goal ultimately, if not initially, would be to set it up as Raid5, with 4 2TB Hitachi drives.
I’m only looking to cut DV, DVCProHD, and probably ProRes (non HQ). Wondering what your thoughts are of the product as well as any resources you found convincing you to buy it since again, any searches on the Cow come up pretty empty. Nothing over at LAFCPUG or 2-pop.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Rafael,
Thanks very much for your insight. Very helpful.

Thanks Rafael.
So that begs the question, what is the reasoning to cut the fps in half? What is the purpose?

Thanks all. I just got a test file. The camera guys transferred it to a .mov file. I downloaded it, brought it into FCP and when I dropped it into a sequence. Since I didn’t use any particular preset, it asked me if I wanted to change the sequence to match the clip. I said yes.
Worked perfectly. No render bars. Smooth playback from an internal sata drive. Just did a basic export using compressor using h.264 and half the frame rate and half the size. Worked perfectly.
I’ve attached a capture of the QT settings.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the quick reply. Just one clarification. When you say “You may want to export as Pro Rez and if so set the render to Pro Rez on the sequence setting, it will save time during the render. ” what do you exactly mean?
Do you mean that when doing the transfer from the raw files, I can have them create ProRes files? I’m just a little confused by the term export in this case.
Thanks again.

Thanks Steve. It’s not so much that I have storage space issues. I’m wondering if there is a benefit of putting the extra media on a diff internal drive instead of the default location of the boot drive.

Thanks Kevin. I’ll give it a try. If I start feeling that I’m just getting bogged down, I’ll look into more memory. I’m not there right now as I’m just dabbling in AE.

To clarify, I don’t have a monitor that will allow me to CC that way it needs to.
Yeah, I’m waiting for my AE Apprentice book to show up so I can start from the ground up. But your point is well taken. One of the things I will try sooner than later is some time remapping to see if AE’s is more intuitive to me than FCP’s. I’m not saying FCP’s is bad, I just struggle with it.
And then I’m going to try to pull a key in both. I’m curious with a general understanding of both, which one can give me a better key within the confines of time and basic skills. Obviously, the more time I spend with both, the better it will be.

Thanks all. I never thought of CC but then again, I never have to do that or have the capability to do that.
One of my clients uses FCP as a cuts-only finishing tool where all the other stuff (titling, animation, tracking, etc) is done in AE.
I think what it will come down to for me is doing an A/B type comparison using the same media and seeing where it’s beneficial for me to use one over the other. Although I’ve never given it as much time as I should’ve, I’ve always been tripped up using the time remapping function in FCP. It always gives me some sort of brain lock. Can’t figure out why.
I briefly looked at AE about 4 years ago but it was a bit much for me. Now that I’ve tinkered with it for an hour the other day and watching a Kramer video late last night, it doesn’t look nearly as daunting as it once did for me.
Thanks again for the feedback.
Paul
