  • Those small AM speakers in most rooms were called Auratones, and were standard equipment by many recording and broadcast people. Any professional mixing room should have at least three sets of monitors, typically back in the day the third set was auratones, or better referred to as horratones, because as you can imagine they didn’t sound very good. However that is what most people were listening to the broadcast or recording on, so many professionals liked to check the mix on them.

I feel it would be irresponsible for a mixer to not check his mix on anything other than his studio monitors. Just my opinion. Just like when we color correct, we CC on a broadcast CRT, but also have a broadcast LCD and consumer LCD all hooked up. I want to see what it’s going to look like on a TV just like I want to hear what it’s going to sound like on a crappy speakers. Lets be honest, whatever we work on is always going to look and sound as good as it can in our suites, after that point it is almost always a compromise. I personally want to see and hear what that compromise is.

Now I apploigize for taking this thread further off topic…

  • Actually I like Shane and his mixer’s strategy. Why not listen to a mix where it’s eventually going to be played?

After I mix something (on studio monitors) I always listen to it on a TV or computer speakers, sometimes even my car.

I was fortunate enough to sit in on a mastering session in a major facility in LA. As soon as the session was done, the recording artist burned a CD and went to listen to it in their car leaving behind the million dollar room. I’m pretty sure none of their fans had a mastering room, but I’m sure they had cars.

I just picked up the JVC 24 inch last week. I’ve used it in the past and have been very happy with it. IMO its the best LCD in it’s price range, $3699 locally in LA. The blacks are great, much better then the Panasonic 17 and 26 I’ve used in the past, and the color looks great. I haven’t used it for SD yet and probably won’t, I have a SD CRT that I use for that.

    Best,
    Billy

You’ll need a firewire based capture device. I use the AJA Io LA. If you are just doing dvcam the Io LA will be sufficient but if you want to expand to HD in the future you can take a look at the Io HD. There might be cheaper solutions but I only use AJA, just my preference.

If you use the Io LA or Io HD you’ll also need to run your external hard drive off of a SATA or Firewire card in your express slot. The Io LA/HD needs to be the only device attached to the firewire bus, thus the reason you need to run your hard drive off of another bus.

You can check both of them out here:

Totally agree, apple care is worth every penny. In November a processor in my G5 Quad went bad, as well as a few other things. The parts were back ordered for 3 months. They knew this wasn’t acceptable and they gave me a new Mac Pro. I couldn’t have been happier.

Right now you can pick up the JVC with HD/SDI from B&H for $3699, thats a great price. I’ve used the 20 inch version and I think for the price JVC’s LCDs are the best. I think they have better blacks then the Panasonic LCD’s, but I love the waveform on the Panasonic, wish JVC had that feature.

December 7, 2007 at 8:30 am in reply to: Snapping Tool

I noticed the same problem last week. I thought I was crazy. I’d literally turn snapping off by hitting “N” and it would just turn back on. I did notice if I turned it off by hitting the on screen button it seemed to limit the problem. (or am I really crazy) Still strange and a pain considering I go back and forth between snapping all the time.
