how connect dvcam deck to macbook pro?
Posted by Rod Minott on March 12, 2008 at 6:49 amI’m new to FCP, and video editing. I plan to edit using a macbook pro. How can I ingest dvcam video from my Sony DSR-2000 deck to the macbook pro? I don’t see a firewire connector on the deck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

March 12, 2008 at 7:18 amYou’ll need a firewire based capture device. I use the AJA Io LA. If you are just doing dvcam the Io LA will be sufficient but if you want to expand to HD in the future you can take a look at the Io HD. There might be cheaper solutions but I only use AJA, just my preference.
If you use the Io LA or Io HD you’ll also need to run your external hard drive off of a SATA or Firewire card in your express slot. The Io LA/HD needs to be the only device attached to the firewire bus, thus the reason you need to run your hard drive off of another bus.
You can check both of them out here:

Go down to page 5. Your deck doesn’t look like that one? What’s in the upper-right corner of yours? A blank spot?
I’m just curious because I’ve never heard of a DV or DVCAM deck without firewire.

March 12, 2008 at 5:38 pmThanks for the brochure. I checked the back of my deck again. You’re correct. There is a spot that will take the firewire, but looks like I never had the optional DSBK-190 ilink installed. It’s just blank with a plate covering the outlet. I bought this deck back in 2001 and overlooked having the firewire included. Thanks again for following up with me on this.

I realize that this may not be much help in your immediate situation, but ror a little bit more than an AJA box I have a nearly new Sony HVR-M15U deck for sale. It handles DVCAM and definitely comes with firewire. Give me a call if you’re interested. (858) 655-5767.

Thanks for your offer. I think I’ll stick with my current deck and will find a solution using it. Again, thanks. -
