  • Stephen,

Are you referring AVCHD? If so FCPX will recognize, import, and transcode individual files extracted from the file structure. You can create Optimized or Proxy copies …

You should be able to “mount” what you copied, and it will be listed as a “Camera.” FCPX will then recognize the storage structure and translate the .MTS clips in preparation for importing.

If you are looking to drill into the folder structure to gain access to the individual clips – you need to “Show Package Contents.” Here’s the path to the .MTS files:

If you want to work with the files as individual clips you need to pull them out of the archive in order to access independently.

  • [Josh Birch] “Hi Guys,

What is the highest possible export option with an mpeg-4 container (.mp4) with a H.264 codec. My client is asking for this format but can’t figure it out?

When I go to Export > Master File it only gives me an option for .mov container with H.264 codec….

    Thanks in advance

    Josh”

You need to set this up in Compressor. One option is to built a Setting’s Preset using QTExport Components – Encoder Type:MPEG-4 … and then customize by pressing the “Configure” option.

November 7, 2014 at 6:55 am in reply to: Strange Split Track Output…

    Charlie,

So you want a single video file with 8 audio channels: L, R, C, LFE, LS, RS, Stereo Mix-L, Stereo Mix-R …

    yes?

First thing I did was create a good stereo mix using the 5.1 stems. Then I split the stereo mixdown into 2 discrete mono channels and saved out (DAW).

I then imported new discrete clips into FCPX. The 5.1 stems were already in my Browser and assigned proper Roles. I created two new Roles for the discrete L + R clips (Stereo Mix L, Stereo Mix R) and assigned accordingly.

My timeline consisted of a video track (no audio) in the Primary, 6 stems for 5.1, and the discrete L + R clips. Finally I defined Channel Configurations in the Audio Browser.

    Here’s the Timeline Index:

Here’s how I Shared it out as a Multitrack Quicktime Movie:

    Here’s the final output:

And I think you know how to export discrete Mono stems – Roles as: “Separate Files” or “Audio Only as Separate Files.”

Look into RX 4/RX 4 Advanced by iZotope. I’m running Advanced, so if you have questions – don’t hesitate.

Also check out MR Noise by Wave Arts.

  • [Bob Woodhead] “I talked to a few audio guys today, and they all agreed that 0 in a clip should be 0 on a timeline, however one mentioned that most stereo panners attenuate 3 or 6dB in the center. “

Are you dealing with Mono files?

I can explain common -3dB attenuation: Constant Loudness

    Consider this:

On many analog audio consoles (mixers) – hard panning a mono channel left or right results in equal apparent (perceived) loudness. OTOH If the channel is panned center, the output would be hotter due to the combined or mixed output level of the audio. In order to maintain constant apparent loudness, the output level of center panned audio would need to be attenuated by (in most cases ) -3 dB.

Now try this exercise in FCPX using a -12dBFS sine wave test tone:

Edit the clip into timeline. Set Channel Configuration to Left. The meter will read -12 dBFS.

Now set the Channel Configuration to Right. Again, the meter will read -12dBFS.

Now set the Channel Configuration to Center. The meter now displays a -3dB attenuation.

Now set the Channel Configuration to Mono. The meter now displays a -6dB attenuation.

    * * *

    Also Try This:

Duplicate the mono test tone clip in timeline. Set up L/R panning for each. So one Left and one Right. Meters will show -12 dBFS. Of course I’m adding clutter to timeline, so …

Select the hard panned mono clips and make a Compound Clip. Again, meters will read -12 dBFS.

    Make sense?

[Scott Witthaus] “Dumb question, maybe, but when hiding or showing these I see no changes to the clips in the browser or timeline (unlike show and hide Marked Ranges). What am I supposed to be seeing when using these?”

    Scott,
