[Lance Bachelder] “BTW I just delivered my first full mix on a doc yesterday using nothing but FCPX and roles. 5.1 mix sounded great but I sure missed bussing my dialog, effects and music…”

    Hi, Lance.

Cool. How did you handle Loudness compliance? Were you delivering to spec. or letting the network handle it after the fact?

Lately I’ve settled on the TC Electronic LM2n Loudness Meter, since most of the stuff that I do is 2-channel audio. It works well in FCPX. For 5.1 I have Nugen’s VisLM. I bought the Waves meter as well. I don’t use it that much.

As far as Logic X, I’m running it. I was getting allot of use out of it until I moved to Pro Tools 11.

The thing is the multitrack/mixing environment in Logic X is fine, as it is in Pro Tools. However the file/track based editing is not the same compared to something like Audition. For example in the Audition File Editor you select an area of a clip and press delete. Done. It ripples the file and adds a user defined cross fade without leaving behind the cut point. In Logic X you still need to manually overlap or select the edit point and add a cross fade. Not that big of a deal – OTOH it takes so much longer to edit a piece this way.

As far as file based processing, Pro Tools does it better than Logic X using Audio Suite versions of supported plugins and processes. You make a selection (or select an entire clip) and press Render on the plugin UI. Done.
In Logic X you need to bounce through plugins to track or disk. Pretty common and not a big deal.

So yeah, both apps are great. Logic X is at steal for that price. I still think apple needs to ramp up support for audio post in FCPX. I’m inclined to believe that this is wishful thinking. I’m not complaining, but it would be nice to pick up advanced support for audio.

    Hi Joe.

There are many variables regarding when and how to apply the EQ. One scenario might be applying EQ on a clip by clip basis before you mix down. And then in the so called “mastering” stage, apply global EQ to the mixdown. The latter is generally done much less aggressively. So it all depends on what you are dealing with.

And just to be clear – the Channel EQ that I displayed in my previous post is located in the FCPX Effects Browser/Audio/EQ/Logic. Give it a try:

Now from a personal perspective I would be dealing with similar issues outside of FCPX, and in fact before I mixdown/export. I always handle the processing of clips individually. A somewhat aggressive rolloff might be suitable on a problematic clip but not necessarily suitable on the entire mix.

    Joe,

When you are rolling off the low end the filter is referred to as a High-Pass/Low-Cut filter.

In FCPX set up the Channel EQ as follows:

In this example the “Q” value is 0.83. This controls the roll-off slope.

Also, have a look at bx_cleansweep. It’s a free hi-pass/low-pass plugin by brainworx.

June 14, 2014 at 1:04 pm in reply to: Render audio to engrain effects

[james Lackleter] “Hello again, working on another FCPX cut and have question. Looking to render audio effects and channel assignments inside FCPX. Kind of like how protools has render option. Need that in FCPX, anyway to do this?”

    James,

There’s no way to render using audio plugins in X the way Audio Suite plugins do it in Pro Tools. You probably know the effect is applied in RT – however you’ll need to export the audio in order to “render” it.

[james Lackleter] “Also I need the clips to be separate. I’m bringing dialogue group into protools to create a track, I’d like to keep channel assignments and logic plugs inside protools to do additional work.”

If you want to export your X clips separately – you’ll need to use Roles and export accordingly.

    James,

To change audio config. for a Project: Select the Project in the Browser. Then in the Info Pane in the Inspector, press the Modify Settings button. This is in 10.1.1.

May 14, 2014 at 1:04 pm in reply to: Endless development

This is not meant to be snarky – but I noticed this with apps. by a very popular developer in this community. One app. in particular has somewhere around 35 updates. From what I can see every update includes “bug” or “critical bug” fixes, and nothing more. New features are rare, which is understandable. But 35 updates, all bug fixes? At what point do you start to wonder if the app. is stable enough to use?

If I was running the app. store I believe apps like this should be flagged. As a consumer I’m not saying I wouldn’t buy it. OTOH at least I would know what I was buying.
