September 10, 2016 at 2:40 pm in reply to: Do you think the next FCPX update will require Sierra?

[Steve Connor] “Just upgraded to Sierra and it’s difficult to notice any difference at all!”

Cool. OTOH if they make Sierra a requirement, that’s a different story. Considering iMovie’s El Cap requirement, I’m guessing the new version of X will share the same OS requirement. Unless they have some major plans to merge their video apps., – it wouldn’t make much sense to implement 2 different OS requirements. Of course I could be wrong …

[Robin S. Kurz] “If it uses any Sierra-only tech (that you want/need), sure. Just as it’s been until now. You just simply don’t get the thing(s?) until you upgrade. I’d say it’s HIGHLY unlikely they’re going to force you to upgrade to a FEW DAY OLD OS just to use FCP. They’re not stupid. They know full well that especially businesses are the slowest to make a jump like that, and those are definitely the ones they want on the latest and greatest first and foremost. Be it with caveats or not.

Yeah, makes sense. However up to this point El Cap. is current, and iMovie – which supposedly shares much of the same FCPX code base, is not backwards compatible. It will not run on Yosemite. My guess is the “imminent” X update will share the same OS requirement. If so I’ll upgrade and hope for the best …

September 6, 2016 at 2:12 pm in reply to: how do I copy LUT settings to another clip?

Look into LUT Utility. Apply it to a clip as an Effect. Define your LUT. Then copy/paste attributes to additional clips:

  • I find it interesting that a huge number of video editors are still fixed on a mind set that no longer makes any sense, especially if you are distributing right from the Timeline.

The bottom line is Peak Amplitude is not in any way an accurate representation of Perceived Loudness. The -6dB/-12dB Peak ceiling that many people adhere to is really nothing more than a representation of proportional voltage, aka the signal level. PPM meters (included in FCPX) not only display this signal level, they also display any potential instances of clipping when things hit or pass 0dBFS. That’s really their sole purpose.

From a general perspective, two or more clips with the same exact Peak Ceiling will almost certainly differ in perceived Loudness.

We now have Loudness Standards/Targets for Broadcast Distribution (EBU R128, ATSC A/85, etc). We also have recommended targets for Internet Mobile distribution. Video editors need to learn how to use a Loudness Meter to monitor and mix to the necessary targets. Specifically – Program or “Integrated” Loudness. This is an accurate representation of Perceived Loudness over time for an entire piece of audio. There are additional descriptors including a True Peak Ceiling.

Bottom line is if you need to boost levels and target properly, use something like the Waves Plugin that was previously mentioned. There are many other tools and methods. Then use a Loudness Meter to meet the desired targets relative to the delivery platform and/or method of distribution.

January 24, 2015 at 4:44 am in reply to: Avid ProTools free coming

The fine print for the free version is very disappointing. From what I gather – you’re limited to 4 active Projects stored in the cloud. No support for video. No support for third party plugins …

    See here:

    Info at Pro Tools Expert

And the existing professional user base is just going crazy over their newly announced pricing/subscription model. I’ve read a ton of comments by music producers stating that they’ve had it and they’re moving to Logic X. The Post guys are (at least for now) rolling with it.

I run PT 11 here. I have ’till the end of the year to decide whether I’ll be paying a monthly or yearly fee.

    Noah,

Great article. In fact I was wondering why you went dark there for a while and barely appeared on this forum.

    I hope all is well,

    David,

You can drop the 4K footage right into a 1080p timeline. If the res. is 4096×2160 – that’s 1.90:1. So you’ll have slight letterboxing before any scaling.
