How many ram slots do you have? Get as much ram as you can afford and your PC can handle. Rendering time will increase. That being said, an SSD is the single best improvement you can make to your pc. You’ll notice night and day difference. Save up, buy as much ram as possible and an SSD.

Looks like a bunch of shape layers animated with a radial wipe and some opacity changes. That should work.

When you duplicate your compositions, you can’t do it in the timeline, you must do it in the project window.

If you look at this image (not mine, stole off google as an example): https://motionleague.com/unite/uploads/FileUpload/9/9.png
You mustn’t duplicate the “spheres” layer on the bottom where it has “scale.” You need to duplicate it on the top left where it has “comp 1, solids, spheres.”

If you want to learn more about AE, I suggest having a watch of a few tutorials of “precomposing,” it’ll help you understand AE better and will help you with your project.

  • Is he standing still and the camera is moving with him staying stationary? Or do you want to fill in the background behind him?

What have you managed to do so far?

To get started, you’ll have to get a bunch of pictures and lay them out in 3D space and then animate a camera to have them fly past. Then animated each picture composition on with a linear wipe. Then it’s just a matter of adding accentuating things.

When I Ram preview, i can open other applications and it will keep ‘ram previewing.’ When I go back to AE, its loaded and will play when I hit ram preview.

    Check out this tutorial: https://vimeo.com/102842035

You can use your Illustrator layers, you’d just have to convert them into masks/shape layers first. You’ll see why in the tutorial.

If you google Zach King there are some videos that explain how he does what he does. My understanding is there aren’t any effects, but rather just cleverly thought up scenes that are cut together really well.
