Ok, found the problem – my fault. The tracks in question were centred rather than panned left and right and this somehow created an effect much like the treble being knocked off… you learn something new every day,
cheers,

Thanks Jon.
No, no effect icon. There’s something weird going on because whatever I drop onto that track around that area also has the same effect applied…. but a bit further beyond that area on the timeline this doesn’t happen. I tried dropping a bit of dialogue onto the track before the piece of music and that somehow seems to re-set the track so the music then sounds fine. Likewise, there is other audio on the same track later-on which seems to re-set things so that after this the audio effect problem doesn’t occur. I’m not sure if I’ve explained myself particularily well… but basically it’s all a bit weird. I’m on v2.8.1 of Composer. Is this a glitch with this version by any chance?
Thanks,

Ok, so I realise I’m the only one posting on this thread, but found the solution to my problem so thought I’d share in case anyone else is having a similar problem.
After a technician came to look at my system I did indeed have a corrupt pre-computer file, but the main problem was that I had too many sequences in one bin. I had around 80 duplicates of the feature film sequence in one bin as I save regularly and duplicate in case something goes wrong and I’m not sure where / when it happened (e.g. getting out of sync). What I didn’t realise is that Avid keeps monitoring all these sequences when the bin is open – keeping all the media ready to go- which was using up all my system memory and causing my computer to crash. In my main active bin I now keep just one sequence, and then drop the duplicates into other bins which I don’t have open.
I was also running a USB2 drive. I’ve copied this to a firewire drive which can only improve things.
Hope that’s of help to someone at some time,

Ok, so I de-fragmented the drive and it’s still freezing on me.
One idea was to delete the pre-compute files to free up space on the external drive so that it runs smoother. When I go to the media tool, however, it tells me it cannot find any pre-compute files, even though I rendered over 100 effects two days ago. This points to some kind of corruption of the pre-computes to me, which might also be causing the freezing.
Is there any other way of identifying and deleting pre-compute files without going through the media tool?
Thanks,

Apologies Dino, I thought my message signature gave my system specs, but have just realised it’s blank. Thought this might just be one of those quick answer ones, but understand the frustration of getting very little to work with.
Thanks for the reply though, very helpful.
Right, now to see if this signature works or not…

Michael,
Many thanks, that worked really well. One small thing – when I opened up AVID after moving the media between the drives, it came up with an error message about a problem reading certain media files. The options were to quarantine, ignore or cancel I think. I did ‘ignore all’ and it seems to be working fine. I just presumed it was thinking there was a problem because some of the media had changed drive – would that make some sense?

December 13, 2008 at 10:16 am in reply to: Audio sample rate change on import – what do I do?Hi again,
If I capture the audio at 32kHz and upgrade it to 48kHz in the offline, will this process be repeated in the online (resulting in a reduction of quality) or will it capture it directly as 48kHz from the original tapes?
Would it be better to wait and get the tapes transferred again allowing the audio to be captured at 48kHz directly from the tape?
Many thanks,
Paul
