April 18, 2013 at 6:43 am in reply to: Hyperdeck causing GPT Protected disk partitions? No we cant recover the disk with the content. The disks would still mount in a Hyperdeck and play back (our only way to recover footage) but would not mount on a PC or a Mac. TO make the SSD usable again you have to drop it into a Windos PC on a SATA connected dock and do the following….
Start / Run / type CMD and press enter to get to a DOS prompt.
type diskpart
type list disk
Note the disk number of the SSD
type select disk X (obviously X is the disk number)
type clean
type exit
type diskmgmt.msc
Allow it to initialise the disk but do not format it
Then mount it on a Mac and format normally.
For the record we are going to go back to ExFat formatting as we seemed to have less trouble doing that.

April 17, 2013 at 8:18 pm in reply to: Hyperdeck causing GPT Protected disk partitions? We did fix it for a while. A firmware update to the Hyperdecks about 4 months ago stopped the issue completely. However it seems like it might have returned with the latest version! It’s not the docks or Mac OS doing it, it is the hyperdecks. THey seem to change the partition type. I’m about to try switching back to ExFAT formatting to see if that changes it, and if not we will go back a firmware version. We have 6 shuttles and 5 pros all exhibiting this. Mostly Samsung SSD’s.

December 21, 2012 at 12:50 am in reply to: using HDMI to SDI Mini Converter with Go ProWe did it at a recent OB. Go Pro 2 to a BMD HDMI to SDI convertor to our BMD router and then into a Snell and Wilcox Kahuna in our van. We were running in 720P50 though.

October 13, 2012 at 4:46 am in reply to: Why don’t Blackmagic produce a HD-SDI extender/repeater?You can actually use any of their mini-convertors that you may have spare that has a looped SDI In / Out. The out is re-clocked. eg – with our OB truck we have used the BMD SDI to analogue convertors as SDI repeaters. We also use the SDI distribution amps and have several 6AH 12V gel cells set up with a tail to power them thus avoiding any potential earth-loop hum with local power (and it does happen and I have a dead router output to prove it). If you are doing lots of long runs though you are much better off to invest in fibre. Best thing we bought recently was a 600m drum of mil-spec fibre with 2 pairs in it. Long runs and earth loops are no problem.

August 31, 2012 at 7:40 am in reply to: powering blackmagic converter with v-lock batteryWe ran a bunch of them off 12v 4ah Gel Cells in the field – in particular the optical to SDI convertors. They ran for a full 8 hours without recharge. Might be a suitable option?

THe author frequents the forum. We were going to use it but got distracted with Telestream Wirecast instead. Will likely revisit shortly though.

July 3, 2012 at 10:55 am in reply to: System build for video department at a high schoolThere is COTS software to do it. But it’s on a MAC. We use Softron’s Movie Recorder with multiple Decklink Studios in a late Mac Pro with RAID storage to capture 3 streams of Pro Res in HD. Can also simultaneously play out using their On The Air Video. Expensive software but rock solid. Hope someone comes up with a Windows solution soon given the impending death of the Mac Pro.

We built a small 6 camera OB truck a few years ago and we ended up going all JVC 251’s, but running up Camplex hybrid fibre / copper rather than JVC’s multicore for extended cable lengths. While we used JVC’s CCU panels, it is possible to buy some alternative generic branded panels that supposedly can talk to a variety of cameras. Most of the camera CCU remotes are simply RS232 or RS422 bi-directional comms so it shouldn’t have been too hard for BMD to add that to their camera convertor system. But sadly they didn’t. Maybe the variation in bitrates, connectors and so on would have made it too difficult.
I dont think adding a proc amp after the camera is the right way to do it though.

I have been using a BMD Ultrastudio 3D with great results on both FCP and Media Composer. If that performance is anything to go by the Ultrastudio Express might meet your needs and budget.
