What frame size, frame rate & codec are you capturing? By the sound of it you are trying to capture HD uncompressed to a single drive…. Which is a hell of a big ask given that it will be around 1.4Gb/S. Even HD ProRes to a single drive (220 odd Kb/S) is pushing it. When we build a capture system as a minimum we spec a 3 drive RAID 0 array (with quality drives) for uncompressed HD. Usually we do this in a Mac Pro chasis but you can do it with a good external RAID. You might be able to do it on an SSD, particularly if you are compressing it.

I’d be having a close look at the connectors they have used and how well they terminated them. If it’s not the router and not the cable then this would be the next port of call IMHO.

If it did ProRes (or better still DNxHD since Final Cut has suicided) I would order 6 of the rack mounts and 6 of the camera mounts (that stupidly dont have a V-lock mount option) units tomorrow. No kidding. Do it and I’ll write the purchase req. 6 in the truck as iso-recorders and 6 on the back of our older JVC HD-251E’s to do away with the evil HDV.

Meanwhile, we have been using the Ki-Pro to great effect in this situation.

Student and pro versions are identical. But under the terms of the license you probably shouldn’t be editing client work on a student version.

We have experienced the frustration of this as well. We are using KiPro’s as backup recorders in our OB truck. The cameras all run HD over fibre and very occasionally if a connector is not mated correctly or is dirty we can have a signal dropout. Unfortunately the vision mixer passes this right through and the Ki Pro drops out of record. Our master recorder (Mac Pro with Decklink) does not stop, and nor does our 3 Play. I would love to have the option to set this – “record no matter what”. Might not be particularly simple though.
