Hyperdeck causing GPT Protected disk partitions?
We have just swapped out a Ki-Pro (which was awesome – should have been rack mount from the start) to trial a Hyperdeck studio in our OB as a backup recorder. We are currently using some Samsung 256mb SSD’s & we record in ProRes. We have been formatting the discs in a Mac as HFS Journaled, but once used in the Hyperdeck the discs become unreadable on a Mac – they wont mount or even show in disk utility. But the Hyperdeck can still read them and play off them. If we drop them in a PC you can see them in Disk Manager and they come up as a “GPT Protective Partition”. Then the only way to recover the disk in order to erase it and use it again is through the windows command line utility DiskPart using the “Clean” command, followed by a fresh format in a Mac.
This one has me stumped – anyone else run into the problem? It could possibly also be the USB / eSATA disc cradle we are using although I doubt it. I’ll try formatting in XFS and see what happens.

Hi Pat,
We are having the same problem. Did you ever solve it. What cradle are you using? We have the U-Speed E-sata/USB 3 cradle and Sandisk Extreme Extreem 480GB SSDs.
When we first finished recording, we checked the drives on one of our Mac Pro Edit systems and everything was fine- so the problem was not immediately evident. We then lent the drives and the cradle to our client so they could off-load and they called us with the “disk unreadable” error. When we got them back, we had the same issue, even on the machine that read it before. Tried machines running both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion with no joy. The files are still viewable on the Hyperdeck.
We are currently on the most recent firmware 3.7.1 which was installed just prior to the recording.

We did fix it for a while. A firmware update to the Hyperdecks about 4 months ago stopped the issue completely. However it seems like it might have returned with the latest version! It’s not the docks or Mac OS doing it, it is the hyperdecks. THey seem to change the partition type. I’m about to try switching back to ExFAT formatting to see if that changes it, and if not we will go back a firmware version. We have 6 shuttles and 5 pros all exhibiting this. Mostly Samsung SSD’s.

Thanks for your response. Did you ever find a way to recover the data or “fix” the partitions without reformatting?
The strange thing for us was that after removing the SSD from the Hyperdeck, at first it did work on one of our Macs, then subsequently had the problem… perhaps the Hyperdeck created a very “fragile” partition. We’ll try rolling back to the previous firmware and see if that helps.

No we cant recover the disk with the content. The disks would still mount in a Hyperdeck and play back (our only way to recover footage) but would not mount on a PC or a Mac. TO make the SSD usable again you have to drop it into a Windos PC on a SATA connected dock and do the following….
Start / Run / type CMD and press enter to get to a DOS prompt.
type diskpart
type list disk
Note the disk number of the SSD
type select disk X (obviously X is the disk number)
type clean
type exit
type diskmgmt.msc
Allow it to initialise the disk but do not format it
Then mount it on a Mac and format normally.
For the record we are going to go back to ExFat formatting as we seemed to have less trouble doing that.
