Interesting for me as I have a first hand experience of how the Apple Samsung dispute seems to be panning out.

I used to Own an iPhone and had it 18 months. Nice device but I became frustrated by how locked in Apple made it and the lack of openness it allowed. Coupled with the crippling iTunes for PC you have to use. So I switched to the Galaxy S2 and realised just how useful a smartphone can be. A greater choice of apps to suit the way I need to work. The design was familiar enough to make the operational change comfortable. Would I consider it a “rip off”? No it was so different in so many way no way could I consider it an iPhone copy.
My son has just purchased a Galaxy S3 and I was showing him some of the operation stuff and a whole bunch of stuff has been changed and not for the better. But clearly to ensure it’s in no way a “copy” of an iPhone. Does that make it a better phone? No it doesn’t.
And it a shame Apple refuse to allow others to build (at a chargeable cost) on their good ideas and instead insist on restricting products and development. The Galaxy S2 is a great Phone and exceeds the iPhone in many ways and Apple are now intent on effectively killing it off.
Will that make better iPhones or even better non Apple phones? Most likley no it won’t it just restricts choice.

It was also insteresting to read that Apple refused to settle out of court on the Samsung issue. Thi isn’t about revenue and getting the return and recognition from your ideas, even if your ideas where possibly somebody elses earlier. It’s about crippling inovation.
The game is now around owning as many trights to as many ideas as you can. Not with the intent to profit from them by licensing but by prohibiting others from expanding on those ideas.
Granted sometimes that restriction forces a re-think and a better solution can emerge but the effort and cost to achieve that for the little gain is a price end users are paying.

It’s hard to see where Apple see their stance taking them. Becoming even richer for sure. Having a greater control over the products in the market for sure. But how will the end users, the buys of these devices feel about the way Apple choose to do business in the world? And will that change the way they spend their money?

  • GPU acceleration is only used by MC for certain tasks mainly related to rendering.
It is possible to force MC to use non supported cards but you need to check the results are as expected as it’s unsupported that way.

So I’d go with the better card and see if forcing MC to use it helps with render times.

As said it’s worth getting the best now as things move quickly with computers.

August 11, 2012 at 8:30 am in reply to: can you delete an audio track from a subclip?

if you hit delete on a master clip it will offer you the option to delete the media and what parts of the media. so you can select the audio only. But that gives clips withaaudio showing offline.
normally you can’t modify a clip if it has media attached. but hold ctrl shift and link becomes unlink you can then modify the clips tracks and then relink the clip to connect the video.

July 20, 2012 at 4:13 pm in reply to: Symphony and Resolve on same box

No the issue was the need for 3 6pin molex power connectors.
And only having one in the machine.
We ended up getting a 1 to 2 splitter and then made up a 4pin to 6pin Molex manually. Followed the slots as suggested by BM and it all worked fine.

July 20, 2012 at 8:18 am in reply to: Symphony and Resolve on same box

We have Symphony V6 and Resolve running on a Z800.
The Z820 isn’t qualified by Avid yet (but folks are using it and it seems to be fine)
We have the Quatro 4000 card and the 580 card and onthe Z800 had fun and games with the power for those cards but sorted eventually.

You will need to use the display driver that Resolve needs 280.26 I think and Symphony won’t like that so modify the QualifiedGpuBoards.txt file to include that driver version for the 4000 card (at your own risk of course)
Other than that you are good to go.
The Extreme HD 3D card has a few problems you need to be aware of. Capture of SD or HD is 1 frame offset from the actual timecode which makes it hopeless for capturing or conforming. Digital cut is frame accurate unless you use the scaling in the card and then the output lags by a number of frames (4-6 I think)
Also the RS422 port isn’t spec’d right. It works ok for locally connected decks but run it down a tieline and it just won’t work.
We have 2 of these cards in different machines and they both behave the same. Raised it with BM but no responses from them.

July 3, 2012 at 12:26 pm in reply to: So if Avid goes under, then what?

Nothing really unexpected here. Makes sense to rationalize the product portfolio.
Staffing reductions would logically follow that.
Impossible to know what is going on behind closed doors but check out the info online about Avid Sphere. If that came out soon Avid would steal an important and valuable market place and revitalize ISIS and Interplay.

July 2, 2012 at 8:56 am in reply to: Link to AMA acting really buggy

I agree it sounds like the MXF files are being made with the same Tape name metadata and MC is seeing timecodes that coincide and cross linking media.

I’d AMA all the clips from one card. Check the tape/reel names and if need be modify them to be unique. Then transcode to Avid media.
Mount the second AMA card and modify the tape/reel to be unique and Transcode.
    And continue like that.
The issue here may well be that the recorder should have had it’s tape ID being changed every time much as you’d label each tape different but in fact you may well have effectively created a whole bunch of 001 “tapes” and as all may start at timecode 00:00:00:00 the chances of time code overlaps is very very high.

For tape based sources tape name, start timecode and end timecode are the matches MC uses to link clips to media.

With file sources it’s file name, source path as well as timecode unless it’s proper tapeless media like XDCAM P2 and others in which case the UMID (a unique serial number) is used to link clips to media.

June 21, 2012 at 8:24 am in reply to: desperate: FCPX hangs on boot up

We don’t edit with FCPX, only do training for others on it currently.
But I find it hard to believe it doesn’t have autosaves and a attic for recovery of work.
However I suspect it’s all embedded in the database and that maybe the issue. But again if Apple have decided to use a database in that way they must have database management tools and recovery tools.

Not that I’d risk FCPX on something that had such a massive time input but I know you can save out a seperate database related to a particular project (sequence) and it would seem to make sense to do that periodically so you can at least recover to there.

  • don’t forget you can use “Set Source Settings” to adjust the Red metadata before you Transcode. But whatever you do test the whole post route first.
