Because Avid has such robust past project support.
You can still open a Version 3 Avid project that used the old P2 import method today and continue editing. Which is why the new AMA can be turned off and legacy import P2 used.
But the way you have now done it iis the correct way its not a workaround. Its the way we teach users to AMA. link and consolidate.

I’m not sure I understand what you need to achieve.
With P2 there are two ways to make Avid media either the old legacy way or the new AMA way.
If you are seeing the mount AMA volume option then you have the new AMA way selected.
When you mount the volume it should populate a bin with master clips linked to the media in the source P2 volume.
Sounds like you are getting the master clips but not seeing media (you do have the MXF AMA plugin installed? type AMA_installedplugins in the console to check the plugins installed and the version numbers)
If everything is correct at the Avid end then it points to a problem with the source P2 folder or it’s structure.
This should work easily. P2 is an established workflow on Avid and I demostrate it all the time while teaching.

Always got to verify the backups. In fact I prefer tk copy and then AMA from the copies to be sure.
And no Avid can’t corrupt facing an AMA mount unless you have an OS or hardware issue.

To record HD (well actually it’s not 1920X1080 but 1440X1080) at the same datarate as SD DV (25mbps) The content is compressed in groups of pictures. And for HDV that is 12 Frames for PAL and 15 for NTSC (yes I know it’s not PAL and NTSC unless it’s composite SD,,)
So the data you capture will be in packets of 12 frames and your edit system will have to unpack those on the fly to create the frame based media you need to edit with. Many post houses will transcode to a frame based reslution on capture or after to avoid those issues.
What ever you do don’t export out an HDV stream or layback to HDV tape!

yes it sounds like the clips are linking to non Red media instead of the R3D media.
try removing any unneeded media.

Avid can capture HDV done it loads of times.
however firewire capture has always been its weaker side. We tend to use HDSDI and 9pin deck control ir an easier life.
The Z1 can shoot DV or HDV but at 25mbps is pretty grim. Also HDV long GOP is no fun to edit with.

I think Danielle was refering to the set source setting menu option which does get greyd out if the format of AMA does’t support it.

Yes FCP to Avid is the key course currently and FCP legacy training has just about vanished.

By all means give it a go and always happy to post but you learn a lot of neat tricks and techniques in a session and that can help prevent the tears that a wrong can draw…

Yes Danielle only certain AMA sources allow the changing of the source settings. Red is one. Generic QT’s another. Most of the true tapeless formats are assumed to produce known settings so the source adjustment is locked. This is an option we’ve requested a number of times as it’s quite possibel to have proper source files with incorrect content. Anyway till then we manage with what we get.

Source files are never changed by Avid whatever method you use.
So Importing or AMA linking will never change the source.
If you do go the slower import route then once imported the masterclip Avid creates in the bin points to the media Avid will have created and not the source file. teh source file no longer needs to be present.
You can always batch import that file again and Avid will know the file name and path (irrespective of any clip renaming you do) and if Avid can’t find the source file with that name at the location it imported it from it will let you naviagte to it. You can also then change the import settings if you don’t want the same as you used last time. One issue with importing is any error in the import settings will end up with “wrong” media being created and you’ll have to trash the media and import again.
If you use AMA you can see the result straight away and even if you system struggles to playback that source codec you can check and change the “set Source Settings” on some formats and adjust as required and then Transcode.
AMA source files do have to stay in the same location with the same name as that is the media MC is accessing.
