  • NVIDIA GeForce GT question – 512 MB vs. 1 GB for MC6?

Posted by Paul Donahue on August 20, 2012 at 7:03 pm

    Hi,

I would like to purchase a 15″ MacBook Pro for MC6. I have found two of them that are very similar, just the graphics cards are different. One has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650 M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and the other has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650 M with 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. Is there a big difference between these two graphics cards? Will they both run MC6?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul Donahue

Not for MC purposes, and yes, they will both run MC – although I am not sure GPU acceleration will be enabled.

It appears that GPU acceleration in MC6/Sym6 is rather limited (compared to that in Premiere Pro) and having it (or not) doesn’t affect performance much.

If GPU is not affected, I wonder why there is such a difference with video cards? Do you think it could affect future upgrades?

Games, 3D, certain other GPU-intensive apps benefit from extra RAM.

Yes, it may affect future upgrades – more memory is (almost) always better. If the price difference is less than $200, I’d certainly go for the 1GB version.

GPU acceleration is only used by MC for certain tasks mainly related to rendering.
It is possible to force MC to use non supported cards but you need to check the results are as expected as it’s unsupported that way.

So I’d go with the better card and see if forcing MC to use it helps with render times.

As said it’s worth getting the best now as things move quickly with computers.
