Thanks – I ended up getting something close by using Particle World with quad polygons with rotation turned off and a long duration (random placement rather than a grid layout), though they’re a bit flickery (it looks like the squares are jumping in front and behind of each other.). I think I set the Z dimensions all to 0 so it shouldn’t be happening. It was quicker than the 240 layer one; I’ll see which they prefer…

Have you tried an export via the Render Queue instead of Media Encoder? It would be interesting to see if a lossless export (or an image sequence) displayed the same lines.

Partly answering my own question – if I put my PNG or .AI file into a new composition, and do all the movement/scaling/etc in there before importing it into my comp that has the Set Matte in, then the mask stays put while the imported comp goes through its merry motions. BUT if I try to move the imported comp, the matte moves as before.
So is the only solution to turn a moving PNG or .AI layer into a comp, re-import it, then apply the Set Matte?

I think if you’re subscribed to CC, you can install older versions of Adobe software.
I’m one of the ones who’s still got FCP 6 and the CS3 Master Collection. And good old Quick Time Pro too ☺
But I’ve also got a CC subscription, thankfully.Paddy, CreativeMedia.org.uk

Yes, it’s Directional Blur in Prem CC – I’ve just tried it out myself. Thanks for inspiring me to browse some of the effects I don’t usually use….

Good suggestion re disk space. I was also wondering if you’d updated the operating system, which could maybe have slowed things down?

Hi,
I also do my editing on a less than super-powered computer.
I hope these tips are useful:
1. Try setting the playback resolution on the “programme” window (I think that’s what they call the main output screen) down to 1/4 while you’re editing.
2. Also make that window a lot smaller so the computer doesn’t have to display such a big picture. Or even close it altogether if you’re able to edit by audio alone sometimes…
3. Have you applied any effects to your timeline video prior to editing? That will slow it down too, of course. And check that the timeline is properly set up for the video you’re using. In that last case, I often want to apply a Curves setting to everything from a particular set of shots. I do this by putting those shots into a sequence on their own (without any effects), then use that sequence as my source for the clips on my main timeline.
Then, just before I do the final render, I apply Curves to that source sequence which, of course, adds that effect to everything I’ve used from that sequence in the main edit timeline. But I’ve not been slowed down by rendering the Curves while I was editing.I hope that makes sense – I’m having trouble explaining it…
Good luck! I’m using Prem CS3 on a 2011 MBP and Prem CC on an i5 1.8Ghz PC with 4GB RAM!– Paddy

Premiere Pro lets you draw boxes in the Titler, and you can set the opacity of the fill on them, and arrange them to be behind the text.

Sorry for unclear specs and terminology, folks. I’m turning a collection of ProRes LT and DV-PAL files into 720p AIC files.
I think I may have worked it out – I went to prefs and deleted all caches and databases, and moved them to my biggest disk (though I had around 70GB free on the disk where it was cacheing before).
It seemed to be rendering (I’m just adding some curves) at a more sensible rate (2.5 hours, rather than 28 that it was predicting yesterday), but I’ve just checked it and it’s crashed! 🙁
Thankfully I’ve been saved (again) by the wonderful JES Deinterlacer.Paddy, CreativeMedia.org.uk

Thanks for that – it’s looking pretty nasty on screen with the rich black values – your suggestion for the blue + 100% key works better, though I still see a middle band of a colour between the two end points.
I think we’ll have a printing company selected soon, so I’ll get some tips from them.Paddy, CreativeMedia.org.uk
