Michael, yes I am sorry as well M100 has been my main NLE for 15 years now. It is like an old friend. I still really like it.
But for years now I have used FCP more and more to pre-process media be fore finishing in M100.
Here is why.
I often work on interviews shot in multicam EX3 and EX1R usually. I often have 20-30 hrs of footage that has to be cut down to 20-30 1-3 minute chunks that get added to a new version of a legacy project in M100. These are boating safety videos and we typically shoot 2-3 days in one location interviewing officers about specific laws and problems in their state.
I do a quick assembly of each scene from all the officers usable footage. I then make a TC stamped QT version for the producers to look at and also we use a transcript service to make a text file. The producer then gives me an edl of the clips they want for each scene. I put this together in FCP very quickly and then export each segment to M100 where I add B-roll titles etc, and finish in M100.
For projects like this it is way faster to work natively than to transcode everything (not to mention drive space).
The FCPX magnetic timeline and scrubbing is also lightning fast, I can pick clips and get the on the timeline incredible fast whipping through hours of footage just by scrubbing (and JKL-E), and it plays animated graphics w/o rendering right in the timeline, then renders in the background. So unless M100 has some serious updates I may have to phase it out.

I actually use FCPX to view and categorize AF100, AVCHD and XDcam footage. I use FCPX timelines to do rough edits and then import those into M100 as Prores if I want to edit in M100 or if I am adding footage to a legacy project.
I have to admit that I am pretty much switching to FCPX now it works so well and fast with all the native footage from these cameras, only needing to transcode if you export.
If M100 could work with these formats natively and updated to tabbed Bins and timelines I would prefer to work in M100. But the more work I do in FCPX the less I feel the need for M100. With FCP7 M100 ran circles around FCP, but I am afraid that with a powerful new mac and RAIDS FCPX runs circles around M100.
I still really love M100 but it badly needs updating, especially working natively with modern codecs.

July 5, 2012 at 12:47 pm in reply to: OT: Thunderbolt and Displays Question – Need Assistance/Advice Please!I have no problems using an older Mini Displayport Apple monitor on the same TB port as a LaCie TB Raid and a Matrox MX02 on the other TB port.
The first time I did this it did not work with the MX02 and Raid on the same TB port. It was a little tricky to get it to work, I thought I had a bad cable for a while. It took a few restarts but now it works fine. This reminds me a bit of the days of SCSI when certain devises did not like others and it was very picky with cables and positions in the chain as well as the ID numbers.
I have actually stopped using the second “bin” monitor now. I got a neck ache from too much real estate and I find the 27″ screen to be all I need in fcpx. I do all my monitoring on a HD SDI monitor on the left side of the IMac and there is a client plasma screen above my iMac. I often do my initial rough edits w/o the external monitors on, this seems very comfortable, but as I refine the edits and grade the HD SDI monitor is a must. And the HDMI is also nice to monitor even w/o a client as you review the project.
My MP setup is very similar with a 30″ single monitor and SDI and HDMI monitors as well.

In order to play a clip a NLE needs to access the media that is linked to the timeline. How else would it play?
Also when you edit it needs to know about the clip. If you have thumbnails and audio waveforms visible in the timeline, those need to be updated as well, this is done by reading the media and analyzing it.
If your HD’s and system is slow try editing proxy media. USB2 with ProRes would be pretty slow, possible even unwatchable.
I hope this helps a little.

Tabbed bins and programs would be a great improvement.

June 27, 2012 at 3:52 pm in reply to: FCPX will not export – cannot cancel previous project in share monitorI would run DiskWarrior on your system and media drives first. This means starting from the DiskWarrior DVD, get it from Alsoft.com if you don’t have it yet, and make sure it is the latest version. It seems likely you have a HD directory problem. Also repair the permissions on your drives in Disc Utility.
I would also trash the FCPX prefs and initially remove the bad project from the Finall Cut Projects folder on your drive, try removing the Event from the Final Cut Event Folder as well. Just to see if FCPX is OK w/o this project and media open.
I hope this helps, let us know.

June 26, 2012 at 4:10 pm in reply to: Transistion Making Background Show Through UnevenlyA stone age way to do this would be to export your clips with handles and then import those complete clips. This may seem like a lot of work, but it is easy and pretty fast.
I often do this type of work in AE, you have lots of control there and then I import the rendered file. In AE you can easily match the bg perfectly in case it is not true white or whatever. This can also be done easily in motion as well using feathered masks.

June 21, 2012 at 2:29 pm in reply to: SSD’s + GoFlex + Thunderbolt + Happy Birthday FCPX[Bernard Newnham] “I’ve now replaced my first SSD – see above – with a Sandisk 120Gb Extreme. hopefully it will last a lot longer than the other one, which is being returned under warranty.”
I have been running 4 128GB Kingston SSD’s in Kiosks (HyperShuttles) 10 hrs a day for about 6 months now w/o any problems.
I now have an OCZ 240 Vertex 3 I am trying out for this, so far so good. There are very big differences in performance among models only a few are approved by BM.
What is curious is that the manufacturer specs often prove to be inaccurate, for example the Vertex 3’s are faster than the higher specked Vertex 4’s.
I am using SSD’s in Kiosks because they should be really reliable and last a long time. I guess it still is a young technology at least for some manufacturers.
Anyway Happy B-day FCPX. I am very happy with FCPX 10.0.5 on a new iMac as tricked out as they get. AE runs very well on this as well. I use a TB raid and a Matrox MX02.
I am a rare convert. I never liked FCP legacy, I did use it when I had to be compatible with other editors. I always preferred M100. But now I am making FCPX my main NLE, it feels really modern and it is very fast. That was always my complaint about FCP, to much rendering and re rendering and a very cluttered interface. M100 is very fast and has a clean interface. But FCPX is a pleasure to use and is as fast as M100.
The biggest change is how quiet the whole suite is. My old 8core MP was really loud and the 12 drive SAS raid had to be in another room, it sounds like a jet taking off. The Imac system including a couple raids, FW 800 drives, SDI Monitor, client Large LCD monitor, and a 1402mixer fit in a small space and needs no sound insulation. It has a nice airy look as well.

I use omni laws most of the time. I have a very good sennheiser directional law as well (expensive) I use that a lot if I can poit the lav at some ones mouth. Like on the bottom of a baseball cap visor, your current head dress would not work as well for this.
I also really like using the RyKote under covers to cut wind noise and to hide the lavs. You can be very creative with these.
