It would be cool if roles were color coded and could be displayed/expanded/collapsed/sorted in the the project timeline.

Now the next step may be to also be able to assign roles and individual clips as well to a bus (also color coded). And then have buses at the bottom of the timeline with option to display or not. M100 does something like this and then there is a virtual mixer with individual tracks and buses that can be manipulated in real time or with keyframes.

I hope something like this or something with the same control, and possible better GUI will be implemented soon.

I just downloaded the trial for parrot and tried it from my MBPr, it works OK, you can use it as a second monitor instead of just mirroring and put the viewer on the TV.

I tested with FCPX 10.0.6 and OS 10.8.2.

The image is bad, the color is way off and the gamma seems off as well. It may be possible to adjust in monitor settings but I find it works better just using apples mirror feature when you need to see on an external monitor, you can easily jump back and forth turning the Apple TV on and off from the menu bar. Doing this makes the color much better and the performance is better as well. The reason I turn ATV off unless i need to show a client full size video on the MBP is that you get more pixels on the MBPr when not using the ATV mirroring. I would never use this config in a suite situation only on the road or in a clents office.

The best solution is to get a TB interface like the BM Ultrastudio solutions. You can then use a PRO HD-SDI monitor or a HDMI monitor to view video while still keeping your interface on the main mac screen. For travel this makes a lot of sense. You can edit from a MBPr in a hotel room with a LCD or Plasma TV and with a $145.00 Ultrasudio (or the $495.00 version that also inputs video from HDMI or HDSDI and also component and SD output). This is cool. No external power needed only an HDMI cable, MBPr and Ultrastudio. AJA and Matrox also have similar solutions. Currently the MX02 does not work with the latest Mac OS or FCPX.

October 31, 2012 at 8:41 pm in reply to: Calling all thunderbolt users,

I had some problems initially running an MX02 and a LaCie 6TB RAID as well as a 23″ external monitor. I just kept changing what was plugged into what. Kinda like SCSI. I thought for a while I had a bad cable. Once I had it working it just kept on working.

Now I have dropped the 23 external screen, I dont feel I need it with my 27″ iMac. I also retired (temporarily) the MX02 on this system, it does not work with 10.8.2 or FCPX 10.0.6.

I now use a Ultrastudio Express instead and it runs perfectly switching between CS6 Apps and FCPX. This setup works great with my new Retina MBP as well.

So apart from some initial trouble everything works great w/o any restarts or hot plug/unplugging needed. I have 3 external TB raids I move around between Macs w/o any problems. I have found the single drive LaCie rugged TB’s are no faster than the USB3 version, this is due to single 5400 drive limitation.

FRom what I see TB is rugged and very reliable.

    Brett, are you running 10.8.2?

Bring it into Photoshop and flatten the image, then save as a psd and reimport.

This always works, for me anyway.

Photoshop is still the best for building graphics, with lots of layers and then merging down or flattening, just save aversion with all the layers as well if you need to go back and change a phone# or whatever.

If you export using compressor you can choose a very high quality export, like ProRes4444.

Most likely ProResHQ422 is all you need.

I am not sure why you need to do this but I would try the compressor route. I do this if I have something I want to work on in AE or Color. But always before adding graphics.

August 3, 2012 at 5:14 pm in reply to: Lost link to Final Cut Events folder

I would just move all the events into a new “Final Cut Events” that FCPX made.

Remember on the startup drive it has to be in the movies folder in your user folder.

On external HDs it is on the root level.

I move events in and out of the Final Cut Events folder all the time no problems at all. As long as you don’t change the content of individual event folders this should work fine.

Your problem may be that FCPX only sees folders it made.

By the way only do this when FCPX is not running. When it is restarted it should see everything.

Unless every monitor in the world has a device like the Spyder calibrator permanently installed color reproduction will always be a problem. I guarantee this will never happen.

I make a lot of video Kiosks, and I always buy the monitor that will be used in the kiosk, and then simulate the light conditions the kiosk will be in my suite. I set the monitor to factory defaults and after finishing the content I do a CC pass using the actual monitor as well as my reference monitor. I actually have the kiosk monitor hooked up the whole time editing. This way I come as close as possible to match a clients pantone colors in the logo or whatever.

If you can’t have this much control then use a pro reference monitor, that is all you can really do. I use both Matrox and several AJA interfaces in my suites. To play the kiosks I use BM’s Hypershuttles these days. To many problems with BluRays, Pioneer still makes a really good industrial duty SD DVD player, but all the Blurays I have tried burn out quickly and the discs go bad fast as well, heat is the problem I believe.

The matte tools in fcpx cc are very easy to use and play back in real time.

I often use several correction mattes with various feathers and shapes to grade a shot. And you can even key frame the masks in the timeline. And it all plays back in real time on my current iMac and my MX02 to a hdsdi monitor, quite amazing, way faster than Color.

July 14, 2012 at 3:21 pm in reply to: A key I can’t work out

I would do the work in PSD.

PSD has very powerful tools for this.

If you don’t have Photoshop. You can download a 30 day fully functioning trial, and I bet after trying it out you will buy it.

If you need to learn how to use it I would suggest Lynda.com. Lots of great tutorials there.
