Anyone else have issues with MXF files? I have a Sony FX9 test clip that will no longer import into FCPX. The supplemental ProApps codec pack has been installed.

I’m beginning to wonder if some of this requires Catalina. Mojave is technically OK, however, now I have two formats that are no longer visible, even though codecs have been installed. However, the FCPX menu still says Download Additional Content. When I click it only the Catalina installer shows up.

If you have an older machine, like a mid-2014 MBP, this will break RED footage, even after installing the new RED Apple workflow installer. No video visible from RED files inside FCPX. That series machine was the last with an Nvidia card. Even though it works with Metal with other apps and plug-ins, it doesn’t with RED after this update.

Thanks. I figured out a simpler method. What seems to work is to turn on the Finder column for Comments (macOS). If you open the Get Info panel for a file, you can add whatever text comments you like. That will show up in the Comments column. If you move the file to another drive or folder, those comments will follow.

A PC will probably be better bang-for-the-bucks than a MacBook Pro, however, sometimes you get good deals on an Apple refurbished machine. These will have “like new” warranties. Also check Macsales/OWC.

In the PC realm, look at some options from Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus, or Acer. Get as much RAM as you can afford and that the laptop will hold. Premiere tends to make better use of GPU power, while AE likes as many CPU cores as you can throw at it. Photoshop will likely be OK with nearly any better-than-average laptop.

If it’s a new project without these clips already existing in that project panel, then the answer is “no.” Premiere Pro doesn’t allow a standard project that only includes a sequence and no clips. You might want to check out the workflow using Productions.

Are you using FCPX’s native captioning function? If so, captions are different from subtitles. Captions are designed for closed captioning and so your formatting options are limited. Is that what you want and does your target delivery support embedded or sidecar captions? Or were you intending to end up with actual on-screen subtitles (open captions)?
